I'm flying to Turkey tomorrow morning to begin a job hunt. In a seemingly unrelated event, this morning a friend emailed me to tell me he got job in Hargeisa, in the internationally unrecognized state of Somaliland. As I emailed him about my own adventures, I realized that I've never seen an ad for work in any unrecognized country.
And then in that vein I realized that the TRNC seems like it would be a good place to work. It has a relatively high standard of living, and it speaks Turkish, which I really want to learn, and travel between there and the Turkish mainland is quite straightforward.
Anybody know anything about finding a job there teaching adults or high school students?
Thanks and regards,

Don't have any direct advice to give but go back through the posts on this forum as I'm pretty sure someone commented on working at a uni in the TRNC.
You could always try posting in the Greece forum too and see if anyone who's worked in Greek Cyprus has also tried their luck in the north
I once did a visa run there and spent the weekend in Lefkoşa. I found it a strange but interesting place with a similar vibe to Gibraltar. The people I met were very hospitable and charming but also reserved. Not so sure about the high standard of living, but that's relative I suppose. |

Taiwan technically isn't recognized by most countries and there's a huge TEFL industry there.
I've seen some jobs posted from Kosovo which isn't recognized by a lot of countries either.
I've seen some jobs from Iraqi Kurdistan that just say Kurdistan as if it's a separate country from IRaq and when I visited there it sort of felt like it was.
I haven't seen any jobs from Abkhazia, South Ossetia or other places like that. Landing a job in Somaliland sounds really interesting and unlikely. I suppose the living conditions would be really tough. I mean I get annoyed if the electricity just goes out for half an hour like it does a lot here. Must be a lot worse there. |
