Hi all,
I've been working in Madrid as an English teacher for just over two years and I've decided to move to France due to many reasons, but the pressure is on - got to be there as soon as possible. I'm looking for general advice I suppose. But I've learned quite a bit already from reading the posts. I'm used to finding work and "fitting in" where necessary and I usually just go to the country and try my luck even if it is a bit terrifying at times, it's also wonderfully exciting.
I was thinking of Toulouse or Bordeaux as a possibilities. Any opinions or tips on Bordeaux? How have people found the French to be in this part of France? Friendly? Indifferent? I'll probably just pack my bags and go in the end , but any cushioning wouold be gratefully received.

Bordeaux is a beautiful city. It's a major university town, close to the coast and also close to some lovely countryside. Fab, cheap restaurants (especially opposite the railway station.)
There are English schools in Bordeaux, and I would imagine that if you had the right paperwork, it would be relatively easy to pick up work.
I've also heard that Toulouse is lovely, but I've never been.
Oh - one word of "warning". I speak good French, and I've never had problems in France. But French people do have a reputation for linguistic snootiness. The better French you speak, the better the opportunities.
Good luck! |

Hi,
Thanks for that. Although I've passed through Toulouse and that seems quite vibrant as well, I think I'll opt for Bordeaux.
As to my French, well, it's not good. I have a month or possibly two to learn the basics, though I remember some from school. The "snootiness" you mention is something I've heard about quite a bit. I'll just have to grit my teeth on that one and take the rough with the smooth - that's life.
Thanks for your reply,
Johnno |
