Hi Everyone,
I'm 31, female, blond, tidy and am moving to Bangkok on the 10th of October to look for teaching work. I have a degree and and recently obtained a Tefl qualification but have no other teaching experience.
I have a friend who lives in Bangkok so am going to stay with her whilst I look for work and a flat.
So, does anyone think this is a good idea or should I be looking for work somewhere else in Thailand or Asia?
I just want to know if the job market there will present job opportunities for a teacher with little experience. I'm not expecting the world on a stick...! Basically, I want to teach for a year, do some voluntary work at the same time if possible, and then go back to look for work in the UK.
My vague plan at present is to arrive and start looking for work and go around schools and ask if I can sit in on classes or if they have jobs. I was going to start browsing the job sites now and see if I could get in contact with some schools before I go. Good idea or not? Does anyone have any tips for the job search?
Also, I need to research the Visa thing (it's a bit confusing huh!). I was thinking I would get a 90 day visa and go from there. Does that sound about right?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I sure that once I'm out there and getting on with the job it won't seem like such a big deal but right now I could do will all the input I can get....!

for a gap year....
Get a 60 day, double entry visa while you are in the UK. This effectively gives you 90 days (with the allowable 30 day extension in your last month) for your first stay and a quick border run gets you another 90 days (if needed).
This takes the pressure of finding a job and converting to a "B" visa away. (you need to have 21 days remaining on your entry to convert from tourist to "B" in country at immigration without having to do a run to a neighboring country (visa run) to obtain your new visa.
Can you find work = yes. In October you should be able to find something within a couple weeks or so of landing (October is the mid year break with kids returning to school and the new term starting at the end of Oct.).
It won't pay much, 30-35k baht per month probably, but there are lots of jobs available for anyone under 40 and holding a degree (even without any experience).
If you want to find something faster than that, look at moving just outside the city. Things like rent drop to 3k from 10k and meals drop from 40b to 20b but the wages are the same.

| Remember to arm yourself with your diploma and official copies of your university transcripts. Without them, the better jobs will be harder to come by. |

Hi,
Thanks ever so much for your replies - it really helps to put my mind at rest and make decisions. Sorry about the late response - I'm working a lot to save money and sorting the trip takes some serious organising huh! I have a ticket now and am arriving in Thailand on the 12th of October and will get on with the job hunt straight away. I'm sorting travel insurance now...!
