Hello all,
I have been applying for jobs and in Turkey and I finally have heard back from one. it is located in Adana. I have been doing some research and reading old discussions here and one thing I've determined is that Adana is HOT. I don't like the sound of that but if I start in September or October and leave in May or something, then that will hopefully miss most of the hot days. It might not be an easy year if it's so hot but I think I could manage.
Has anybody heard of Oxford Language Academy and what type of company this is?
I hear that the Adana region is the biggest agricultural producing region of Turkey. That is just my thing! I love produce and fruits and vegetables and figs. I could see 'heaven and hell' as well.
From all sorts of internet images, the city doesn't look so bad, like a sprawling asian city for example or a gray soviet industrial city. It has green plants growing, and while it has high rises they are clean and white, surrounded by green things. Two things I dislike are temperature extremes and sprawling cityskapes, with noise and congestion and ugliness. The two sort of feed into each other and worsen things, whereas I could handle heat better in nature. The city doesn't look so bad.
I think I will be in contact with the school and we'll see what happens.
I will try to not idealize and then devalue this city/company/country/industry like I tend to do not with people but with places and things that I put my hope in. My main question now is whether I could handle the heat, and what strategies I could find to stay cool. I'm sure there are other questions as well and I want to learn from my mistakes of the past as I start to enter into communication. I am as nervous at this as many others are when it comes to relationship/meeting people
Thanks |

I don't know anything about Adana-except from driving through once and it was very very hot- or that company
However, as you seem to be nervous about this move, why not go to Istanbul where are there's a greater concentration of foreigners and- hopefully-more support for newcomers to the country? Just a thought |

I second that. It's much better to pick a different location. It's great to be hopeful, but one should also be realistic and if you know you can't deal well with extreme heat then don't purposely move somewhere where it's really hot. I would go to Istanbul if I were you. You'll probably be much happier. |

I forgot to say that I'm now almost at the end of my sixth hot and humid Turkish summer in the Med and although my body has acclimatised, I personally still find it tough going
The other option, of course, is to make sure that you won't be in Adana for the summer (it starts getting hot mid May and runs through mid September in the Med). Istanbul can be as much as 10 degs cooler |
