No matter what dates you have booked summer holidays for, your no hot water dates will never coincide.

Need a drink to warm up, brrrr!

That't what happened to me this year. I got back from my holidays just in time to be hit with ice cold water coming out of the shower head. On the bright side, the first hot shower you take after it's back on is 100 times more refreshing than normal. You've got something to look forward to!

Happened to me in May and water was icy! Guess I was just lucky to be first.

This is the first year when my holiday coincided perfectly with the hot water going off.

No cold showers for me this year!

I thought I would be safe from the hot water cut off because I go to the local swimming pool which has showers. No. Their hot water was off too. Confused

When do they turn off the hot water and for how long? I've heard it's a crapshoot and then never inform people. Chalk it up to the Russian way.

Usually it gets turned off for two weeks. I've heard the dates for each region are published in newspapers, though no one has ever specified which one and I've never been bothered to check.

Mine was off for 15 days. A little note appeared by the main entrance of the building a couple of days before to warn us. Think it is possible to check on internet as well but haven't tried it.

Yey! Water's back! Just under 10 days. Better than previous years - ura! Time for a shot to celebrate.

The hot water gets turned off every year to allow for repairs to the system after the winter freeze. All those scorching hot water pipes underground get stressed from the below zero surroundings, I am informed.

The link below should tell you when your turn is:

Not sure. I have always thought that communist or former-communist ones were the only countries to do so. Communal sharing ethic and all that. I think most Eastern European countries have phased it out, but could be totally wrong there.

Residential buildings in the czech rep are mostly privately owned now (by co-operatives made up of the people who live in them) and we are now responsible for handling such things (also including maintenance of outside grounds). It's a bit of a hassle, though the building where our flat is has a great manager (my father-in-law:-)) It's made it all much more predictable, at least
