Hi Everyone,

I recently became interested in becoming an online ESL teacher. I don't have any experience teaching English anywhere and I don't have any of the certifications. So I'm not sure where to start... probably with a TEFL course, I guess. Any advice? Thanks!

To give you accurate, informed advice...

What is your country of passport?
Do you have a degree?

Depending on where you are from (employers and many students do have accent preferences) and whether or not you have a degree (often an employer requirement for Asian companies) will make a difference as to the how and where to get started working on-line and whether or not you will make any money as a teacher.

I have a US passport
I have a BA in English and a Masters degree in Public health
I'm 26 and female, if that helps too. Smile

Thanks!

Watch the job boards here and on the Korean jobs forum as well. They pop up from time to time.

There was a thread on here with a list of on-line teaching agencies (but most of them have long since died for obvious reasons).

Your US citizenship and BA mean that most employers from the Asian rim will consider your application as an on-line teacher (even with no teaching experience provided you have a fast enough connection and the technical savvy to deal with it).

There are other ways: start your own website (not as daunting as it seems), networking through yahoo, twitter, FB, etc). If you plant to start out then you will need to set up some way to get paid (merchant account for a website, pay pal, etc).

Thanks for the info! Do you think a TEFL/TESOL certificate is necessary to start? I'm not planning to do this full time... so I'm not sure how much I want to invest. On the other hand, it would be nice to know how to be an effective teacher... know what I mean?
