Hi

I wanted to ask the value of having a Dip Tesol in terms of finding a good job in the U.A.E. I also have a degree in Business Computing, a cert in tesol and 2 years teaching in K.S.A.

No idea what a dip TESOL is, but if you want to up your chances of getting a good job, get a related MA.

Hi VS

It's a Diploma in TESOL, equivalent to a DELTA. I am weighing up the option of doing this or my PGCE back in UK. From what I have read on this forum, I am beginning to feel that the ESL environment in the Middle East is filled with nothing but snakes and charlatans. I like the idea of living in U.A.E though so I am thinking teaching in international schools might be a better way to go.

Far be it from me to give advice on the UK stuff. A PGCE to teach in the better International schools may very well be the best choice for you... especially if it at the same time opens up more opportunities in the UK at some time in the future.

I'm sorry to refute your characterization of a Dip. in TESOL, but after listening for years to my British colleagues go on and on about the importance of a DELTA, it seems that the ONLY equivalent to a DELTA is a personal recommendation from God almighty!

It's tiring to hear after a while!

"The DipTESOL is accredited in England by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority at Level 7 of the UK National Qualifications Framework as are masters degrees in related subject areas.""

I am only basing it on the above...are you suggesting that neither the DELTA or Dip Tesol are recognised outside the U.K? That's kind of my point. On this forum most people are saying a related M.A is the minimum requirement for a good job in the U.A.E. If that's the case then I need to review my options.

No... just the opposite in fact. All of the brits that I work with think it is the best thing since GOD.

In fact if you listen to any of them the DELTA is better than an MA in TESL/applied linguistics/TESOL.

Especially if those degrees come from anywhere that isn't the UK.

As for the UAE... they LOVE the brit alphabet soup.

Sorry Guvnor, I didn't get that? So employers in U.A.E like the DELTA?

Yeah, go try your luck at the H.C.T. You know, Hell's Colleges (currently being run into the ground by) Tayeb.

Your DELTA would be received with open arms. You, on the other hand, would have to give up some teaching principles, assuming that you already have some.

It's the truth!

It certainly is.

But don't worry. HCT will replace any emphasis on doing your job with endless projects, PD, meetings, and conferences to talk about doing your job.

While our two leading HCT haters - who are proud of that accolade BTW Cool - carry on, I'd say that there are a few employers who may consider DELTA as good to have as an MA, but that is not a widespread situation. The MA is still better to have for a long term expat EFL/ESL teacher who wants to make sure that they are at the top of the food chain.

Again, I'd look at what gives you the greatest benefit outside the UAE since it doesn't sound as if you plan to be a permanent expat like so many of us.

WOW...I'm honored and humbled. Please, no one go so far as to compare our work to that of Woodward and Bernstein.

Wait a minute...Idea...we could co-author a revealing expose of HCT on the inside...with a title like All the Sheikh's Men and Women.

If you listen to the brits at HCT or any of the other uni's I have worked for in the Gulf... they LOVE the brit alphabet soup... many of the brits swear the DELTA is EQUAL to or BETTER than the MA.

Of course in the real world it is a simple thing called math... you know a Delta (a year long diploma) vs a 2 year MA... go figure.

Personally, I think you are better off with the PGCE (more brit alphabet soup)... with it you can do the international school circuit. And many of those schools make nearly what you could to start with at HCT in the UAE... you have better opportunities.
