Hey guys.

I've somewhat given up on the idea of working in Japan, but would nevertheless like to return for a visit.

However, I do plan on visiting Kyushu for 2 weeks in January (making Fukuoka my base), and wouldn't mind making a few inquiries at various schools in order to get a feel for the work situation. Finding future employment isn't my first priority (seeing Kyushu is), but I figured I'd check out a few schools...probably in vain.

I'm not really interested in shared hostels, but am wondering if there might be a single room at a reasonable price? I managed to find cheap accommodation in Tokyo as well as Kyoto (around 3000Y), and am wondering if there might be something similar in Fukuoka.

Hope this topic somewhat fits under the blanket of eslcafe relevance.

Hmm, let's try something radical. Type in Fukuoka and either Guesthouse or guest house into a Google search.

Voila!

If you're looking for a recommendation among the scores of GHs unearthed by Glenski, I once stayed at Kaine and it was pretty decent. It's in a good location and the girls who run it are cool and friendly.

Thanks for that.

I did do some searching, but came up short. I forgot that Japan really is bloody expensive. Not interested in dorms.

Kaine looks nice. Not 3000Y, but nice!

I'll have to deal.

Sudz,
Just how cheap were you hoping to find a place? If you ever found something the equivalent of 3000 yen in the U.S., for example, you'd probably think it was not all that bad. Just curious, as 3000 yen for one night is pretty darned cheap, IMO.

Glenski,

Actually I think that 3000Y is quite reasonable for Japan, and I won't blow of my trip if I can't find something in that range Just thought that a 3000Y room wouldn't be out of the question, as I did find something cheaper than that in Tokyo (granted, it was in Ueno, and had a shared bathroom). Also managed to find a private room and bathroom in Kyoto for that price (though the owner was a nut). A lot of privates in Fukuoka seem to be around 5000Y +, which to me is a bit pricey compared to where I usually travel in Asia (granted it is Japan). Cheaper than Toronto though, where I struggled to find something half-decent for 100CAD.

I'm generally not a cheap-ass when it comes to accommodation (contrary to this post), but I should try and be as thrifty as possible since I'm saving for an MA.

I guess it all boils down to deciding what you are willing to take, be it a private room with private everything, or something shared. Have you looked at a travel guide or the JNTO site to see what might be available? The Lonely Planet's Thorntree discussion forum might be someplace you could go to ask for advice, too.

A shared bathroom would be okay actually.

Think it's just a matter of more research (this was just a shot in the dark). I do have an LP guide, but it's a bit outdated. Checking out Thorntree is a good idea, which is what I'll do.

I'll be traveling during Chinese New Year, and while I'm not 100per set on Japan, it's definitely in my top three. If it wasn't for being slightly thrifty, it would be #1.

Thanks again.
