...safety concerns from family. I really want to apply for TESL jobs a little later this year, and am excited at the idea of teaching abroad. I talk about this career idea to my family often, but almost always it turns into an argument about how it's not safe, especially if I went alone.

I guess this is silly to ask, but is there a good way (or certain programs perhaps) that pair people up to teach abroad? I think my family overestimates the need to go with someone, but it would be nice to go with a pal. I can't find anyone in my own personal life who wants to do this. (Or a one or two who do, but can't for other reasons.)

And does anyone have any good ideas in convincing family that doing this is safe? That really stresses me out.

You had what it took to get a degree... and old enough to have graduated you are big enough to cut the apron strings and get your plan in action.

The reality is, if you are coming from the US, that most places on the planet are SAFER than your home city.

This site compares crime rates between any two countries. Might help in your struggle.

Steki, thanks! That looks like a great resourse. I will use it.

Glenski,

I have told my family I would like to go to an Asian country, mostly Thailand, Korea, or Japan. I know these are safe places, which makes this even more frustrating. I hope if I show them some numbers, it will help.

Now if I could just find someone to go with...(which I would like to do anyway, it isn't just allaying my family's fears about safety.)

Although finding someone to go with sounds like a great idea, it might be easier and more useful to make online contact with someone who's already there.

You can use the PM [private message] function on this forum once you have enough posts. Not everybody has the time to help a newbie but I think most people are at least willing to answer specific questions and meet you for a beverage after you arrive and get settled in.

Once you get on the ground you usually start meeting all kinds of folks.

Remember too that every country has different regulations. Some less developed places you can just fly into and other you need to do a lot of preparation and paperwork, including the some of the ones you mention.

Figure out where you want to go to begin at least. You can always change countries later.

I have decided where I want to go, at least for a starting job. I want to go to Thailand, and I'm still doing my homework about it. But it sounds like one of the better places to begin ESL, and one of the easiest places to find a job. I actually need to make a thread about this later, and start applying to jobs soon...

If you have a degree and $3000 in your pocket, then get a tourist visa (60-days), buy a plane ticket (one year open return - from your local travel agent or airline ticket office - NOT online) and arrive in Thailand in late April.

You will be working by mid May (legal work with visa, work permit, etc).

If you don't have a degree then listen to your family. Legal work in Thailand is NOT possible without a degree (in spite of what you read on some TEFL websites). Caveat Emptor.

I do have a degree. A B.S. in Secondary Education (I'm qualified for 6-12th grades here in the U.S.) with a concentration in English Language Arts. So it's a perfect fit. I should have no trouble finding a job. Of course, I do want something decent, but am not expecting to start at the top. I just want some "walking around money" after expenses. And then perhaps, with experience under my belt, teach in another foreign land, and after a time come back to the U.S. for teaching here (since I cannot find a teaching job here.)

OP Lack

If you are interested in teaching English at the junior- and senior-high school level, I know of a school in Kuantan, Malaysia, that will probably be looking for a replacement teacher for their August start.

PM me if you want details.

I really don't think it will assuage their fears if you tell them you have found someone to go with you. If they are already that afraid of circumstances abroad, why would they feel better knowing you go with a total stranger? It's like choosing a roomie out of the blue.

Look, I'll be happy to help you publicly or with PMs with respect to Japan. Just what are they afraid of, specifically? Please bear in mind that no country is 100% safe.
    * Japan has its infamous case of the NOVA teacher and foreign hostess who were murdered by Japanese, however by and large, Japan is considered a very safe place in terms of crime to live and work.
    * As for terrorism, you are going to find no cases of foreign terrorists in Japan, and darned few local ones. Compare to your home country.
    * On the other hand, it is a country that gets frequent earthquakes, and I'm sure your family knows about the March 2011 disaster. Stuff like that happens whether you live in select areas (key words here) of Japan, Indonesia, or Louisiana.
    * Health issues. Well, how healthy are you now, and do you expect to be terribly sick here? Pre-existing illnesses are something to look out for, no matter where you live (including present country), but you don't want to aggravate any condition you might have now. At least the health care system here is very dependable and inexpensive.

All I can say is, be as prepared as possible and stay in contact with your family.
