|
|
Hi all, I have a question regarding working in the Middle East.
I was admitted to my masters because of my work experience, I still had to pass and finish the degree but I do not have a bachelor degree. I have been teaching in Korea for over 5 years, I currently work at a university, and I will be completing a CELTA in winter. I will also be starting a doctorate in business administration next year.
Has anyone got a visa with a master but no bachelor degree? Which countries if any allow that? Can you support a wife and child, and save money on the salary?
Cheers |

You were able to work in Korea with just the MA? I was told that Korea was strict about the 4 year undergraduate policy. |

Korean Law requires a minimum of a bachelor degree. I know plenty of 3 year bachelor degree holders here. As for people in my position, I haven't met any.
One recruiter suggested to me that I buy an undergraduate degree but I am not interested in fraud. I did my masters the hard way and I don't want to diminish that. |

Interesting...I'd contacted an employer about this issue a while back (language center), and they'd mentioned that they couldn't get me an M2 visa with just an MA.
Might you have an M1?
BTW I've heard of success stories in UAE with just the MA. The other countries I'm less sure of. |

Thanks for the heads up, I knew a lot of people doing business in the UAE but I think they disappeared when the GFC broke.
I have never heard of an M visa, most teachers hold an E2, some university teachers hold an E1, and international school teachers hold an E7.
The E2 visa requires a minimum of a bachelor degree and allows you to work at a university, public school and private school. An E1 requires a degree related to your teaching area, usually a higher degree and only allows you to work at a university.
The language centre you contacted was wrong, I have held 3xE2 visas, and I know 2 former teachers with MA's one from St. Andrews and one from Oxford who had E2's.
The ESL job market in Korea is very intense now with salaries falling and conditions worsening hence I am looking at my options. I have an MBA btw. |

Ooops I meant E1/E2, not M1/M2
I've posted a lot about the subject of "MA but no BA", as I'm planning on doing Nottingham University's MA TESOL program. Like you, I was admitted based on experience (and probably the fact that I'm willing to pay international fees for the course).
I do remember hearing some success stories in the Middle-East forums, but can only specifically remember UAE.
It's great to hear that you were given a work visa based on your MA. I originally thought that Korea was the one country where you needed the BA!
I can't say that Korea is at the top of my list, though it's nice to know that it's an option. |
