I am planning on doing the CELTA in Chiang Mai and am wondering what teaching opportunities are available there for when I complete the course. I would like to teach in Japan, but if I don't find anything there I might stay on in Thailand. I have a BA in an unrelated field, so I would think that the CELTA would help. What does compensation and cost of living look like in that area? Thanks! |

2 things:
1) ChangMai is a popular destination with lots of back packers grabbing piece work to extend their stay (lots of cheap competition)
2) timing: The school year ends in Feb. and restarts again in mid May. There isn't much work between Dec and May.
Compensation in a tourist destination in Thailand is lower than elsewhere (typically in the 25k baht range) and the cost of living is higher (with more distractions to spend your money on and you will pay tourist prices).
Move 100km in any direction and the salaries will go up 20% and the cost of living will drop by 20%.
Will you find (legal) work in Thailand with a degree, passport from an anglophone country, white face, and a CELTA = yes (100% chance of finding work).
