Hello,
I am interested to teach English some where in Asia, Thailand would be my number one choice. If not Thailand then i am open to Taiwan, Vietnam or China.
I have a college diploma from Canada. Based on my research Ontesol (online) and Global TESOL(half in class, half online). Will they be recognized in those countries? Are the courses worth the money?
Or please recommend other courses that are worth taking and will get me the job! |

IF you have a bachelors degree (not an Associate diploma) from a Canadian university you do NOT need a TEFL/TESL/TESOL certification to get a job/visa/work permit in Asia.
If you are going to Korea then an on-line cert is OK.
If you are going anywhere else then get on a plane and do your cert "in the classroom" in the country you want to start work in. There are lots of reasons for this not the least of which are getting acclimatized to the local work environment and networking.
The best recognized brand names are CELTA, Trinity or SIT TESOL. There ARE others that are equal in quality and lower in cost.
Make sure your cert is 120 hours (or longer) and includes a minimum of 6 hours of practicum with real (not peers) students.

Thank you very much for the tip. which brings me to the next question how long does it usually take teachers to find a job? Once they got certified in the country.
I know that every one will look for it at a different speed, but if i push myself does 3 or 4 weeks to find a job sounds reasonable?
Besides 120 hr course, should it be a approved by a certain organization? |

Depends what you look like Seriously, sad but true. If you're older, ASian, Black, fat, have visible tatttos, it's going to take you longer than if you were a young, blond haired, blue eyed person.
Depending on the time of year, a month shoudl be more than enough. Check about visas though. Sometimes depending on the country, you have to process it outside the country.
As for online courses, usually they carry less weight than on-site ones unless they have a practical teaching component, plus 120 hours. 100 at the absolutely minimum.
CELTA is pretty popular, generic ones are ok as well. Approval is pretty easy to get. Some places create their own approval organisations and are approved by them. |
