Is it a red flag if a school has a "Teacher Recruitment and Welfare Officer"? I'm thinking this could be a sign of the school having a hard time finding/holding onto teachers. Thoughts?

A LOT of schools in Viet Nam are now having a hard time finding and retaining teachers these days. Mostly, due to the illogical visa/work permit policies of the last three years.. A lot of teachers have left.

Thus, this kind of position is becoming an absolute necessity for all but the smallest schools.

This thread is indicative of the general trend:

Regarding visas have a look at this:

It will give you an idea of just how muddled the situation is.

Sigmoid, I agree partially. Yes, many people have left but enrollment is way down and new schools continue to open. Boggles the mind. The only thing I can think of is the two year wait for the proper paper work to be processed to open a school.

I am seeing schools offering 50% discounts, long time schools (mainly the small ones) closed/sold and classes with 3-5 people. Years ago I never taught a class less than 15 to 20 people.

Many schools (not all) continue to treat their staff badly both Viet and westerners. The turn over rate is in creditable especially with the Viets.

I am seeing and hearing more Vietnamese out of work. In my opinion only, the language schools and lower end "international schools" will be trimmed off the family budget first. These schools are a luxury not a necessity.

I think it a simple reflection of the worldwide economy.

Thank you, sigmoid and Andy123. That clears things up a bit.

Sounds like getting a Visa is becoming more and more of a pain, not only in Vietnam but almost everywhere....
