i usually use golloyds ...www.lloydstsb.co.jp
It costs 2000 yen for up to a million yen i think and can be done from any ATM. Takes about 2-3 days to reach into the receiving account.

Use XE.com - cheaper than Llyod's, you only pay 420 yen for the bank transfer and nothing on the receiving end and takes about 2-3 days.

Hi! This might be a silly question, but I am going to need to send a lot money home (USA) to pay of loans I have there. Is Xe.com, the best way for me to do this? Do I need a Japanese bank account to use it? Is there another way? Thanks for your help!

I have a question to ask, specifically to those who have used XE Trade or familiar with how it works. I got it set up and all that's left to do is to wire transfer the money to XE's bank account, but that's where I'm having trouble. I think part of the reason might be because I hold a postal bank account, and not a Japanese bank account (does that matter? Confused ). I've already tried it once (after having to ask the XE people questions via email) but the money bounced and came back. Crying or Very sad

Here's what XE told me in the email:
"Your bank will need to initiate an international transfer (hikyujusha kanjyo') so that we receive credit for the funds.
インターナショナルワイアートランスファーとして、これらの資金をあなたの銀行にアドバイスしてください。または、資金はあなたに返されるでしょう。
If your bank is unable to wire the funds as an international transfer you can attempt to remit payment to Bank of America using an ATM via a domestic funds transfer. "

Can someone explain this to me in plain english so that somoene like me will understand? Embarassed Thanks ahead of time.

I've been using XE.com for a couple of years now. I've always had great things to say about it and I'm still fond of it. But, just to let everyone know, the rate I get isn't as good as it was a year ago before they changed their system around. That being said, I still recommend them as way better than golloyds or any other method to send money home.

@mintxleaf

Here is some info that I was given after contacting XE.com and asking for help. I have a post office bank account and can't send money using a teller. Sending money using the ATM involved some trial and error, but I eventually got it down. I hope the following info is helpful to you. This info is for sending money to Canada.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beneficiary Name: Custom House Ltd.
in Romaji: Kasutamu Hausu Rimitetto

in Japanese: 税関株式会社
furigana: ぜいかんかぶしきかいしゃ
Romaji: zeikan kabushiki kaisha

Beneficiary Bank: Bank of America
in Romaji: Banku obu Amerika Enu. Ei
in Katakana: バンクオブアメリカ エヌ エイ

Bank Address:

(Tokyo Branch) 15th Floor Sanno Park Tower, 2-11-1 Nagata-cho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 100-6115
in Romaji: 15kai Sanno Paaku Tawaa, 2-11-1 Nagata-cho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 100-6115
in Japanese: 15階山王パークタワー 2-11永田町 千代田区 東京 100-6115

Account: 21484-011 or 1484011 (If a 7 digit account number is needed)
Transit: 0403001
Swift: BOFAJPJX

Please note that this account is NOT a regular/local resident account (普通). If an account type designation is needed it is technically a business/corporate account.

Your bank will need to initiate an international transfer (hikyujusha kanjyo) so that we receive credit for the funds.

If your bank is unable to wire the funds as an international transfer you can attempt to remit payment to Bank of America using an ATM via a domestic funds transfer. From experience with several of our clients they have been successful in sending us JPY using an ATM. Though Custom House is a non resident account, you may transfer via domestic funds transfer system (so called Zengin system) provided that you indicate "non resident account" as part of the beneficiary information.

"Beneficiary information" is called "Bikou" in Japanese. Unless there is an indication of "Non resident acct," we are not able to receive payment from you. If you have difficulties in locating the column of beneficiary information at an AT, you can try to input, "Non Resident JPY" after the beneficiary name.

Example: Custom House Ltd, Non res JPY.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope that is of some use to you. If not, try contacting Xe.com. They got back to me really quickly when I needed the above info.

Good luck!

Thanks Ryu Hayabusa!

Yea unfortunately I think the problem has something to do with me having a postal account rather than a regular Japanese Bank account. I've tried using the ATM and going to the bank personally but neither worked (even with the help of the Japanese person helping me out)- the money bounced back.

Thanks for the information - very helpful! I'll try again in the near future. =)

I use XE.com all the time because it is cheaper and faster than any other way. The thing is you have to use it with an ATM. If you try and go through a teller it won't work. If you can't use the ATM on your own because of all the Japanese, ask someone at the bank to help you send the transfer using the ATM. Don't explain that's you are sending money overseas - that just confuses things. Just tell them that you just need to transfer yen to "Custom House ULC Non-res JPY" and then provide the bank information that XE gives you when you book a trade. XE asks you to include a reference number with the transfer. You can just add that reference to your own name when you are putting in the transfer. At some machines I haven't been able to add in XE's reference number, but there was no problem. I think it is convenient for them to have it, but your transfer will still go through. Good luck.

I am a happy xetrade user. The ATM at your bank can probably issue you a furikomi card for the in-country transfer from your bank to Custom House, which will greatly reduce the time and difficulty (if your Japanese is weak) of the ATM furikomi transaction. I had a bank employee walk me through that, and it has been smooth sailing ever since.

(Well, my bank likes to dramatically redesign their "user-interface" on the ATMs about once a year, which is annoying.)

You can also carry travel's check home. Citibank offers them at a low commission rate for non account holders up to a certain amount (sorry I don't remember their limit, but you can check their website). The commission is offset by a usually better than wire transfer exchange rate.

Does anyone know the Japan Post Office's charges for sending an electronic money transfer to an overseas account? (mine's in the UK.)

I'm trying to work out whether this method, or going via xe.com, is going to be the best option.

I've checked previous posts (including the FAQs) and the Japan Post Office website but can't find detailed info.

In the FAQ it says "... around 1000 yen for a certain amount, followed by 500 yen for subsequent amounts."

Anyone know what the 'certain' and 'subsequent' amounts are?

Thanks.

This is actually really confusing haha. I am glad people are discussing it. When I lived in Japan, I just went to the bank, and gave them all of the receiving account's info. I cant remember what I was charged for that though...
