Does anyone have the lowdown on Buraimi as a place to live and the college?
I heard that they only have non-native speakers teaching English there because the salary is very low. Is this true? |

Buraimi itself is your usual Omani small town with not much to do. However, as a resident you are eligible to get a border pass that allows you to cross over into the UAE without using your passport. On the other side of the border lies Al Ain which is UAEs garden city. It has every imaginable convenience you might wish for in the desert. If it doesnt have it Dubai is just over an hour away. I think this is the main draw card Buraimi has that other small Omani towns do not. You can live in a small rural town and work in a relaxed environment but still have easy access to anything you could want or need.
The students at both Buraimi University and Buraimi University College mostly come from rural areas and still behave in a respectful manner. They are sometime lazy but generally a pleasure to teach.
I dont know about Buraimi University College but Buraimi University is a pleasure to teach at. I only came after the first semester and apparently missed a lot of drama, but can tell you that the new GFP director is a pleasure to work for. I believe that they may need to hire an extra 40 teachers by September. You know how things work here, everything is done at the last minute!

Sorry that it came across like I was trying to advertise without paying for an advert. There is an advert up in the job section under ITES. So contact the email posted on that advert. They will give you the pay scale etc. I believe new teachers get a different salary to teachers that have been with the company for a year already... |

I think returning teachers are getting an increase as well so everyone should be on the same or very similar packages. BTW I agree with everything said about Buraimi - nice little town but the real draw is its proximity to Sohar, Al Ain and then Dubai.

As I have stated in a new thread~ disregard all posts by ELS Bear, he works as part of the management at ELS.
He does not have your best interests at heart and will immediately defend any of the three companies (perhaps four if Nizwa is included- I don't have clear information on their activities with Nizwa U).
Not an honest sponser by any means, that is all I really have to say. There is enough evidence on this board by people who have been recruited and abused by ELS Oman. Again they recruit for ELS OMAN, Al Buraimi College, and Al Sharqiyah University.
Bad news bears indeed. |

Yeah, I've wondered about some of the content in eslbear's posts.
Bad news bears, but great news from the Emmys...Jim Parsons just won for the second year in a row!

I rather wonder about a new poster who only joined to attack another poster... it seems to me to be a "he said"/"he said" situation.
It is always best to keep your comments about employers... not other posters.

Well wonder no more. I had to listen to his rantings in person and immediately knew his 'speech or voice' when I read it here. Add his own admission to whom he works for and all the 'recruiting' info he 'offers'.
He is a part of the recruitment and abuse which occurs at the three places named. (Again there is a link to Nizwa U, but not clear on what specifically). Teachers need to be aware of what they are getting into or if they are currently experiencing abuses from management they can see there has been a history of it especially from this 'sponsor'.
If you are currently in a difficult or deeply unhappy situation at any of the places mentioned. I recommend you start looking for work elsewhere, even in the UAE, and then resign once you get an offer.
Going to court with this particular sponsor, or trying to be logical, will be mostly fruitless. There are many unsavory characters in the ESL world, but this one is a spider and has a tangled little money web made for itself.
To be helpful if you are 'looking' to get out from 'under' their grip, here is a good list of places to look at.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_universities_and_colleges_in_Oman
Also you can google the private schools, international schools and do your research so you don't end up in the 'same boat'.

ooooo! how exciting, a personal attack / grudge / conspiracy maker has joined the party.
I don't know who you are and couldn't care but you can see my posts and judge for your self. You are the exact type poster that I have clearly stated my position on - wherever you work.
All I can say is that I am quite sure I am not the person he is referring to - my life here is generally pretty calm so I don't now who he was with for the "ranting".
And I will re-state part of my previous opinions - the vast majority of the "spiders" and creeps and problems in ESL are not on the management side - true, the bad ones have a bigger influence in their environment but the real problems are the teachers - too many are arrogant and under prepared for these GCC jobs, old, bitter or just plain xenophobic and anti-social, drunk, careless or aggressively confrontational.
I have an idea which one the 'suitthatdidnt' is.......

The only way a "bad" teacher can get a job is by "bad" management.
It is a basic tenet of good management that the "buck stops here", not with blaming the staff.
Your opinion in this matter indicates a perverse point of view of teachers and management. |

Blame, abuse, and insult the teachers (old, bitter, xenophobic, drunk). That is the modus operandi of M.E. administrators.
Under prepared for the GCC jobs??? It ain't rocket science, dude.
You're busted!!! Deny it all you want. Your credibility=0.

In the M.E. students abuse teachers, not vice versa.
How are things on Planet Inside-Out/Upside-Down, by the way?

Ok, ok, you got me. Busted indeed. And yes, every bad teacher is the product of bad management or recruitment - how silly of me to think otherwise.
Like that guy a while back who told his students, "it's a good thing you pray 5 times a day, you will need it on this test". Obviously the screening didn't catch that little personality quirk on his application. Or the one who turned out to be a bit of a drunk and eventually showed up reeking one day - boy, the manager dropped the ball on that one! One simple interview question....do you plan on being inebriated during working hours? BAM! done. Or maybe the gossip mongers who slowly but surely abuse and bully their colleagues in immature but no less harmful ways? Again, there's that application flaw.
awesome posts guys, thanks for contributing.
