Is the water that comes out of faucets in Ibra drinkable?

No, but you can buy drinkable water easily enough from the nearest supermarket Smile

The tap water is not tasty but drinkable - it is de-salinated water that is processed and cleaned so it comes with a slight chlorinated flavor.

The bottled water option is what everyone uses - buy a cooler and the 4 gallon jugs to save on the enormous amount of plastic if you can! Use the tap water for cooking etc. or making tea / coffee - no worries there.

I agree with Eslbear as far as the quality of the water, the only problem is that the water tanks and pipes can be so dirty that I am not sure you should trust the water. The water is transported in water tanks because Ibra does not have a direct connection to water pipes. Your water will be delivered o
into tanks on your roof once or twice a week. This can be interesting if you used more than expected and run out of water while washing your hair etc.

Do NOT drink the water in Ibra; don't listen to anyone who says it is OK! The previous poster is right that the quality of the pipes makes it undrinkable. You can get extremely ill from drinking it (I speak from experience). It is OK for showering and doing the dishes, but that's about it.

I agree. I won't even use the water in the M.E. to brush my teeth. I'd advise not cooking with it either, i.e. to make rice or even pasta. You can really mess up your kidneys if you ingest the water there.

Buy water...your health is worth it.

I'm sure I'll take the conservative approach that most of you are suggesting and avoid running the water that comes out of the taps through my body.

Thanks for the warnings.

But what about university campuses such as where I'll be working everyday? How do they dispense safe water? Or do they?

They have those water dispensers with the huge water bottles, and some have cafeterias that sell bottled water. And, of course, you can bring a bottle with you to work.

Most people in the US drink bottled water now too. That said, in both countries, I use(d) the tap water for brushing my teeth, and use it for cooking... and boiled for tea.

But... I was in Muscat...

Water in the US is much safer. I use it for about everything, though I do drink bottled water.

I wouldn't ingest tap water from the M.E. under any circumstances, I don't care how long it's boiled. Just take a look at the deposits around the faucets there...do you really want that crap inside your body?
