I've searched the boards but can't seem to find any discussions on this issue. I'm looking for suggestions for how best to go about looking for private students to tutor one-on-one.

I have cards and a flyer made up and have been making the rounds of local Internet bulletin boards with an electronic ad (which have netted my my first local student so far). I'm wondering what strategies, beyond word-of-mouth, have worked best for folks who have been successful as private tutors.

I should also explain, I'm in Chicago, where there are burgeoning newcomer communities (Mexican and Polish especially--God I love eating in this city, but that's another story), so I know potential students more than abound.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to drum up business?

Thanks in advance.

Try the universities. Post jobs there. Check the international offices, they may have students looking for teachers.

Try posting ads in community centres, grocery stores, wherever people congregate. If you have the funds, try the newspaper.

Post where your students are. If you want Mexican students, it doesn't make sense to post in English-only sites. Post in their neighborhoods or in Spanish community publications/markets/etc.

Thanks for the ideas, guys! I have been posting in the main Mexican neighborhoods (one of which I live in). I'm going to look into posting at the local Universities, that sounds like a great idea.

Post your advertizements in Spanish and or Polish.

If they can read the English ads, chances are they don't need a tutor....
