I've tried a couple of vpn and could not unblock skype. I am dependent on it so if anyone has a super trick please pm me. I don't want to pay for the service if it isn't going to work and as well
I keep hearing there are free ones but have not had any luck. I have a phone number where people can call me o skype so would really appreciate any help getting it unblocked. thanks so much! |

Duh. It never even occurred to me to ask if Skype is blocked in Oman. With all the other questions I've been asking about living there, I guess I should have thought of that one too.
Sad to hear. Skype is my lifeline to the world of my friends. Free video phone contact anywhere (almost) I am.
This makes me very sad to hear.
Many potential employers in other countries do Skype interviews. |

There is NO WAY to unblock Skype in Oman, and if anyone here knows they're not going to share, because as soon as a proxy server or shield allowing use of Skype becomes publicly known, Omantel blocks it.
You'll just need to tough it out for a year without Skype. Sorry. |

Aren't there some other VOIP providers with a free service like Skype that you can use for video phone calls computer to computer as long as both parties have the free service, like Yahoo? |

There are still some VPNs that are not blocked here in Oman. The free ones are not worth the hassle.
Most people, myself included, will not share the name of the one currently being used. Last time I did several people must of purchased it and was blocked from Omantel.
Paying is the best option and Skype will work with them. Most will only cost you about 50-60 USD a year. |

Methinks there's plenty of VPN's that are not blocked. I use this, about 12 bucks a month but well worth it.
This is for free, I haven't tested it specifically with Skype but it should do the job, the only drawback being the ads that pop up here and there. |

Hey Mr Gavoni,
Your first "this" is already blocked and everybody knows the second "THIS" Hotspot Shield was banned months ago, try giving some real information for a change.

They are not blocked and the links both work, from my place and even my workplace. I tried yesterday with Skype. Sounds like you could use some professional help.

The issue is more why is skype blocked?
For reasons relating to home grown internet and mobile networks? |

The most obvious reason would be, because people tend to use the phone a lot and Skype would obviously steal some of Omantel's market. The decision seems to have come directly from the Ministry of Communications.
It's either for love or for money |
