Hello! Im a 48-year-old male from the United States. I have a B.A. in English Literature. No formal teaching experience. Plan to teach in Thailand for at least one year.

I've been researching the forums for a few days now, and either remain unclear or would appreciate a few different answers to the following questions. If you have a good link you think I may have missed, I would greatly appreciate that as well.

1. How much is my age a factor is being hired?

2. TEFL or CELTA? I plan on taking the course in Thailand.

3. What is the possibility of finding work in March-April, 2012?

Thank you!

Ben

1) It is a factor but not that great of a factor unless you are looking for a job teaching little kids.

2) IF your budget can afford it the CELTA is the most widely recognized TESOL cert on the planet. If you can't then get a generic TEFL/TESL/TESOL cert. Your degree is what is legally required. The TEFL cert gets you something before you are dropped into a classroom cold.

IF you are getting a generic cert. then make sure it is at least 100 hours PLUS a minimum of 6 hours of observed practicum with real students (not peers).

3) It is the best time to be here. Your chances of finding a full time job are 100%.

Bring your original degree, at least 1 set of university transcripts ( both are required by immigration) and a state level criminal background check (an employer requirement for better schools).

Thank you for the info! Continuing my research I have discovered just how hot and humid it is in Thailand. Hot I can take. Humid I can't. So I suppose that eliminates Thailand. I guess for me that leaves the Czech Republic. Geeze, everywhere seems like a nightmare waiting to happen if you do enough (or is it too much?) research!

May be it would have been wiser to consider that first, before even doing any research !!!!

Pretty important I would have thought, although you can't always tell how it's gonna be, until you are actually there, I don't think..............
