Does an annual housing allowance of SR17000, and a furnishing allowance of 8500, seem reasonable for a single woman in Riyadh?

How hard is it to find housing within commuting distance to KSU; i.e. how much hassle is it likely to be?

Thanks in advance... Confused

As a single female, it will be very difficult for you to find accommodation by yourself. Normally, your employer provides accommodation for single female teachers. Furthermore, it will be difficult to find a furnished accommodation close to KSU with roughly SR25500. You should be looking close to SR30, 000 for your housing if you choose to live alone. It might work out cheaper if you share an apartment.

Hope that helps.

I have a similar question. I am male starting at KSU soon. I want to find a studio apartment, unfurnished, preferably in a new and modern building. I had a look for real estate agencies but haven't found much. Any suggestions how to go about it? Thanks.

chanchan, are you still looking for a place?

I've done a lot of research for myself, and this site is probably the best:

http://www.expatriates.com/classifieds/riy/housingavailable/

I've filtered it so that it shows only apartments and villas in riyadh. Although 17,00SA isn't a lot compared to what families and couples get, it is still a lot, and you should be able to find something easy for that amount. Even as a new building and new apartment! Just not very close to the Uni. I'm sure you'll be able to find something that requires about a 15 minute drive, though....

Can I ask why you are finding your own flat? Does the recruiter or employer not provide you with accommodations on a compound of some sort? Would you not rather stay around other Westerners?

I'm asking because I'm looking at an offer and just wondered. I thought accommodation was standard so I've not even asked Rolling Eyes

Let me know. Thanks.

I know that question wasn't aimed at me, but I thought I'd let you know that it all depends on the agent, to be honest.

Some say they provide you with accommodation.. but what they mean by this is that they'll put you in a hotel room.. Rolling Eyes Which is fair enough 'cause it has a sink, bath, mini-lounge (depending on the hotel).. but it's hardly a place you can call home. So sadly teachers find themselves needing to go out and look for a place.

And compounds (outside of a the contract) is incredibly expensive.. I'm talking at least 90,000 riyals (at the minimum) per year, from what I've seen.

It's pretty likely that the agent won't even let you know what type of accommodation you've got until you get out there. They'll just say "somewhere close to the university"... Rolling Eyes

I'd basically just advise you to be careful and go out there tihinking that you'll have to find a better place for yourself...

I love it when someone states that they're "Looking at an offer" from Saudi. Many times, they mean, "Salivating over an offer" and hoping to GOD that they hear some good news! Laughing

It's just the way it is!
