Hi

I'm looking for some info on teaching in Seville please. I am planning to move there in August from Vietnam with 3 years teaching experience in Asia and a DELTA to my name. Can anyone here living in Seville give me an indication on the amount of work there. Are there business classes available? Is making 1300-1500 euros per month realistic? I'm not afraid to put in the hours. Any info appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,

I haven't lived there myself but a friend of mine did, so I'll let you know what he told me about working in Seville.

He told me he was making around 1500 Euro's or more every month from the academy and with private classes he was approaching 2000 euro's a month.

There are a few established academies in Seville, which pay quite well.

He also said you can rent an apartment fairly cheaply compared to Madrid or Barcelona, and he had a single apartment in the center of town for quite a reasonable price.

On the money front it sounds pretty good,

The main downside to living there (according to my friend) was that the local people can be unfriendly, even hostile, and Andalusia has a reputation for that kind of attitude/behaviour.

I personally cannot say if this is true, it's just what I heard.

Either way, he left his nicely paid job and apartment just after 1 academic year.

Everybody has different experiences abroad though, but I thought I'd share his story with you.

Cheers!

Hi Mal, how is the search for Seville information going? I am also interested in working in Seville.

It appears that there are a good number of jobs there, maybe it's just about being in Spain at the right time.

Have you applied for anything yet? And when were you thinking of arriving?

I havent taught in Seville myself, but I have visited several times and I know teachers who have taught there. Personally, I love the city, it is stunning, lively, its just a beautiful place to be. I found the people to be open and friendly, IF you are willing to embrace the culture of Andaluz.. if not you might have problems. I would say the downside might be the weather, now I am all about the sun and im not happy unless its blisteringly hot-however Seville takes the biscuit, its not uncommon to reach 40-45 degrees in the summer (hence the siesta-you wont see anybody but tourists out in the street from 2-6ish-it is insanely hot, Seville is the only place that has ever made me physically unwell from the heat). The other downside might be the availability of work, I have heard that getting a full time salaried schedule is the way to go in Seville (as oppose to searching for hours here and there as is more common in Madrid). Friends have told me that 1100-1400 is an average salary, again once you have been there awhile you should see your salary increase as you build contacts and building up privates etc, but this probably wont be instant. My only worry about Seville, is that most people I know who taught there left after a year, saying it is a bit too small. To me it seems like a dream, but I have only visited for days at a time and have never `lived the dream`.
