Hi, can someone link me to some resources or offer tips on how to tutor someone to prepare them for a TOEFL test? I was approached today by a student and I have never had any experiences with the TOEFL test. thanks

Get a TOEFL course book and start ploughing through it. Preferably, you should also have a PC with TOEFL software. (Does anyone still do the paper-based test? What does the man imply...?)

Definitely pick up a course book that both you and the student can work with. It's important to know the version of the test the student will write - paper, computer, or Internet based with the latter being very different.

Longman, Cambridge, Kaplan, and Baron's all produce fine preparation courses that come with CDs for practice and test simulation.

Still widely used in Mexico for local application. iBT is the norm for Mexicans going to study in the US though.

Reading and listening test, or speaking and writing test? Know the difference!

Are you teaching them to learn English, or just to know test-taking strategies? Also know the difference in what the student wants. Most students just want a good score and don't care how they get it, but most seem to think a wave of a magic wand by the teacher is all it takes, not hard studying to beef up their ability.

An hour a week will not cut it.

If someone needs just English lessons, then TOEFL is probably the worst way to do it. Test-taking skills are the beginning and the end of a TOEFL course.
