Unbelievable.
All the problems with administration and student behavior at that campus, and now these tragedies. It doesn't surprise me that a wall would fall; their top priority is to build more buildings there. That's where the money goes. If they'd spent the money on things that would benefit the students and faculty, perhaps that girl would be alive.
FWC has to be cursed. That place should just be closed (hopefully to be followed by the other HCT campuses).
My condolences to the girls' families and friends.

My thoughts go out to the familes and friends of both students at this sad time.
MEB, you should be ashamed that you suggest that the deaths of these two students is in some way the fault of HCT administration/management and that these deaths were the result of spending decisions.
According to the news report the hospital have suggested that the cause was the lightening storm.
"My condolences to the girls' families and friends. "
Adding this statement at the end of your post does not make it any less disgraceful. I feel that your vendetta which usually is a little offensive to individuals, perhaps with some justification at times, has gone a little to far here. |

So, how's the view from the moral high ground?
It's a disgrace to justify an unjust system! |

Read more carefully, teachergirl.
I was referring to the girl killed by the falling wall, not the one struck by lightning.
Your reading skills seem to be blinded by your love for HCT.

Dear MEB,
My reading skills are apparently also sadly lacking - I can't find any mention of a "falling wall" anywhere in that story, just one girl struck by lightning.
The only "falling wall" I can find is this, on freesoul's OP:
"Rumor has it that a newly-set wall collapsed and caused the injury that led to her unfortunate death."
Regards,
John |

That's what I'm referring to, John. That's what I based my response on. If, in fact, the OP was mistaken and there was no fallen wall, then that part of my response is moot.
If it's true, then the wall wouldn't have fallen if 1) it had been constructed well, 2) if students had been prevented from getting close enough to be harmed, and 3) if FMC wasn't hell-bent on construction projects.

Dear MEB,
You did notice the word, "Rumor", I suppose.
"The nature of rumor is known to all."
Tertullian
Maybe Tertullian had it wrong, though - maybe not to all.
" If, in fact, the OP was mistaken and there was no fallen wall, then that part of my response is moot. "
Moot? "Subject to debate, dispute, or uncertainty, and typically not admitting of a final decision."
No fallen wall doesn't really seem too moot to me.
Dear John CB,
Why don't we leave moderating to the Mods - that's what they don't get paid for.
Regards,
John |

MEB
It is nothing personal.
My reading skills are fine thank you.
The news report did not mention a falling wall only the rumour being repeated in the opening post mentioned a wall as far as I can see.
Even if a falling wall was the cause, it is not uncommon for people to be killed by falling walls/bildings during storms. The following are just a couple of examples.
news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/6272193.stm
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/7848719.stm
I can assure you I am no lover of HCT and there are things about the employment practices of HCT that I think are not acceptable in 2011. I therefore choose not to apply to HCT for employment.
I do however think that it is unreasonable, on a thread such as this, for you to twist your views of HCT management to somehow say that they are to blame for the death of one or more of these poor students. If it transpires that HCT management are in fact culpable in this accident and that the storm was not responsible then I will be as vocal as you in criticising those responsible.
For now I will simply send my thoughts and best wishes to the families of the two students. With these thoughts in mind I will leave this thread alone from now. |

Well. I guess I need to clarify some points in the OP. There was a rush of unverified news of that night obviously due the panic and anxiety caused by the unfortunate incident. Loads of BB podcast of conflicting news had been circulated. However, It has been confirmed by Dr D. P. HCT Director that there was only some leakage and a broken glass door and that there is no danger FWC's facilities which have been inspected and verified by the Police and Civil Defence.
Still, one of my students said to me that there was some sort of wooden ceiling there that seemed visibly shaky. Again, only a FWC poster can provide an insider real picture of what happened over there, which is highly unlikely as they are, and will hopefully be, anonymous. |

Dear freesoul,
Nice of you to spread the rumor, though - a dirty job, but hey, someone has to do it.

John |

He's an idiot. I wouldn't believe a word that comes out of his mouth!
It's one of the reasons one of the hct hate blogs was/were started! |
