Hi, anyone heard of or worked at Colegio Americano in San Luis Potosi? I understand it's new - just opened in fact. A friend told me about a vacancy but I've heard not-so-good stories about the school. |

So you know that all the colegios in Mexico pay low wages? Or maybe there's a website you can direct us to that has that information on it? |

Exaclty, there are colegios that pay from $15k to $20 and upwards. Unfortunately none of those are in SLP where pay is around $7 to $10k, averaging at about $8k. Again, this wage is fine here if you have no dependents, you work for beer money, you're bumming around Mexico or your other half has a decent job. These are not jobs for the 'breadwinner', unless you like living in squalor. |

Right!!!
From what I have learned most EFLer's have a significant other who makes the REAL money for both and that is because of the very low salaries associated with EFL in general, espeically in Mexico and Mexico City.
As you mentioned, "these are not jobs for the breadwinner, unless you like living in squalor". That's the reason a good friend of mine left Mexico City a few years back. The schools and language institutes did not pay him a living wage for teaching EFL.
Perhaps if EFL were regulated in any way, shape, or form the salaries would be better but as it is now...very low in Mexico. Some of the private schools I went to looked like they could have paid their teachers better than what they did but even there in the private coligios the salaries were not good. Sad really. |

Yes, agreed. Here in DF most people I know who work at colegios make more than $20, myself included.
Of course, whether that will cover the therapy I will have to undergo in later years due to this job, is hard to say. |

Just saw an ad for colegio job here. Colegio de Chapultepec, full time, 8am to 3pm $6500 a month. You'll gather by the name of the school that the colegiatura isn't exactly cheap but the owners sure are. |

Typical Mexico for you when it comes to EFL. Sad. No respect for EFL teachers. |

What are the colegiaturas in those places? My daughters started a private school this year and the colegiatura is 600 a month. I can't imagine the owners are getting rich off that! |

No, it is a typical Mexican salary for teachers. It really has little to do with EFL. In fact, EFL teachers usually make more money than do other teachers. But the same is true of many professions. If you want to make the same money you make in your home country, that isnt going to happen. And it is across the board. You are in a different country and things are different. You moan and cry about low salaries, but you are comparing them to what you might earn in the US (if you could get a job, that is), as if it were something that is just in ESL. It isnt, so it is totally misleading information to state that ESL wages are low, as if others werent. They are. But its funny that you never mention how much lower the cost of living is. And thanks, Enchilada, for providing a REAL example, instead of just slinging mud, as some others do. I agree that that is a low salary. But those are also short hours for Mexico. And probably a fairly typical wage for a beginning teacher. Like MotherF, I have nieces and nephews in private schools and the tuition is in the 1000 - 1200 peso a month range. No one is getting rich, hoity-toity names notwithstanding.
And its interesting that you think that respect is just about money. I have found that teachers are far more respected in Mexico than in the US. If that is true, then few people are respected. Have you looked at salaries in other industries? Low as well, when you look at the education level expected. You say there is no regulation, that is also not true. While it might be slow in coming, changes are being implemented. |

It IS true MOD EDIT, I mean beagal. EFL in Mexico is UNregulated with ZERO standards basically. I'm letting the newbies know the REALITY of EFL in Mexico, especially Mexico City. EFL is NOT a field, it is a JOB, nothing more. I know this is hard for many to swallow in Mexico, especially for those who have an ECONOMIC interest in making EFL in Mexico look profitable.
Changes are NOT taking place anywhere in Mexico. The EFL teachers continue to get paid low salaries with very little respect from the students. Just keeping things FAIR and BALANCED. |

For a decent kindergarten in SLP you need to pay at least $2000 a month - you can imagine what they charge in primary and secondary in those places... |

jeez, I paid 800 a month for their kindergarten and that included two meals a day.
The 600 a month place where they are now is very average for schools here. There is one that is 900 a month, and a couple for that are only 450. |

Follow on to the question for SLP...do teachers commonly get free or subsidized colegiaturas for their kids at their employing school? |
