Hi,
Posted on the general information board which was helpful but now need some region specific information.
I've got my Scottish primary teaching qualification (3-11) and one year's school exprience but from 8 years ago. I'm now doing tefl at a Chinese university which is making me want to return to 'proper' teaching.
Given the dire situation for teachers all over the UK at them moment, I'm considering my options abroad. However, I see 2 obvious problems:
1. I only have one year's classroom exprience (oral English in China doesn't count). 2-3 years seems to be the minimum.
2. Competition from other more experienced/recently qualified teachers from the UK also trying to work abroad.
I do have 'extra skills' in IT/graphic design, art and sport which I think would be great for both in classroom and extra curricular activities but I see the 2 points above as being major hurdles.
Do I stand any chance of working in an international school ie uses a 'British' or English NC or IB curriculum, in the ME?
I'm braced for bad news. |

Not really sure about that... most of us here don't teach in the schools. Mostly adults and university students...
Take a look at the TeachAway website. They are hiring on a contract re-building the UAE system, but your limited experience may be a hindrance. Is there no organization in the UK for their schools abroad? In the US, there are a couple that hold job fairs each year.
The problem with the schools in the ME that hire people with limited credentials is that the conditions can go from bad to awful.

Thanks veiledsentiments,
I'd seen the Teachaway site and the UAE ads- most of the others required far more experience than I have.
I sent my details a few days ago and I've had an initial reply back asking me to apply for the UAE public schools jobs for 2012 so I'll see how it goes.
I'll update everyone as my application progresses. |

This site seems to have a lot of jobs in the ME for school teachers. Don't know if I'm allowed to put the link, but here goes:

Thanks, Desertdawg- I'll certainly look into them.
With TeachAway, I've stumbled at the first hurdle. Although it doesn't say so on the website re: the Abu Dhabi jobs, it turns out they need face to face interviews with an Abu Dhabi official which are in the West/ Dubai. I'm stuck in China until next July but the rep I've been in contact with is keeping my details on file for when I get back to the UK which is one positive at least. |
