Hello All! Hope someone can answer some of my questions about teaching in Dubai!
I am from Canada, and have earned a Masters of Human Kinetics, Bachelors of Human Kinetics, as well as a Advanced Diploma in Sports and Recreation and obtaining my TESOL Certificate. I have 2 years lecturing experience in University and presented research at international conferences.
Am i qualified enough to teach in Dubai? What are the chances I can get a job teaching in Dubai?
My TESOL advisor insists i Can land something around the range of 5000 - 6000 CAN a month. True or untrue?
Thought I would check with you all, the people who are actually there!
Hope to hear some responses!

The short answer is No.
2 years of teaching experience... was it english or something else? Not enough experience.
An unrelated MA, a unrelated BA and a tesol cert.... You are completely and utterly unqualified for even the most basic jobs.
The UAE is not a giant ATM that many folks think it is. Your Tesol advisor is ill informed.

Your TESOL adviser, if he is referring to your teaching EFL in the UAE is... completely misinformed... to be kind (or just trying to get you to pay for his TESOL certificate). To get up to the $4000-5000 pay scale you would need to have a related MA (Applied Linguistics or ESL/EFL) and more than 5 years experience teaching related Academic English at university level.
To be honest, with your credentials you would be hard pressed to even be able to find a job in the UAE teaching English. Unless you were planning to teach something related to your actual education... which would be very difficult as I doubt that there are many jobs there in your field.

I also searched some teaching jobs on the various job searches in the area...some say 1 to 3 years experience while others say no experience will be accepeted with excellent credentials ?
So confusing :S everyone seems to have a different story! |

Try applying to the better international schools. You will find your quals (in phys ed) will garner you about USD3000/month - your TESOL teacher is obviously misinformed. Your quals in ESL are at the low end of the spectrum.
If you don't believe us and prefer to side with the teacher, the responses to your applications will inform you as to who is better informed. If you can get 5-6K more power to you. |

Thanks for all the responses so far!
Not that Im siding with the advisor at all, im just saying even from my own research thats what I have found, within my field anyways.
He mentioned that the position would likely be within a university...any thoughts? |

Is your TESOL advisor going to 'place' you somewhere? I would agree that he sounds very overconfident.

The 'excellent credentials' cited are highly likely to refer to credentials related to EFL (such as someone with an MA TESL/TEFL), not random ones in other fields, I'm afraid.
In any case, this is a forum for EFL teachers and it's unlikely that anyone here can state definitely what opps might be available in the PE field, unless someone happens to know someone who......as helenl well may do. |

With your MA and BA, unless you are a licensed teacher in your home country, you are unqualified for any of the "better" jobs.
If you are a licensed PE teacher with your MA, then you can possibly get jobs at the international schools, but you won't get any job offers for an ESL teacher. |
