Hola a todos!

I am seriously considering a move to Mexico City and am wondering about the possibility of finding a job as a Guidance Counselor (or something similar).

I know these forums are primarily for teachers of EFL, but since many of you work at international/bilingual schools/colegios, I thought I'd give it a try.

A little about me: master's degree in education & counseling psychology, valid school counseling credential from California, and four years experience in California public schools (two years general guidance counseling, one year college counseling, one year intervention/mental health counseling).

What do you all think? Would someone with my qualifications be in demand? Or are unemployed school counselors a dime a dozen, as they are right now in California? Sad

Also, I should mention, I'm an awesome counselor Cool

and I am absolutely passionate about working with teenagers on their psycho/social/educational development!

I realize it would probably be easier to find work as an EFL teacher at a language institute (after obtaining the proper credentials, of course), but to be honest, I haven't the first clue about how to teach English! I figure I should stick with what I know and love, and leave the EFL to the experts. Wink

For those of you that work at international schools/colegios, how many counselors do you have? Are they locals, or foreign hires? Does it seem like there are hundreds of candidates fighting for the best jobs (like at ASF, I imagine)? Are the counselors at your school waaaaaay more qualified than I, like they have a Ph.D. in Adolescent Development from Harvard and have been published extensively in academic journals and regularly present at education conferences worldwide?

In other words, do I have a chance?

I would guess that your Spanishlanguage skills would have to be as awesome as your counseling skills for a school to consider you for such a post.

The ASF just just filled an open position for guidance counselor...they do hire qualified foreign counselors though they also hire Spanish speakers as well.

The upper school psychologist position has a link to a profile to get an idea as to the requirements for that particular job in the guidance department.
