TO TAMMY:
YOU WILL READ A LOT OF PROS AND CONS ON BOTH CITIES, BUT ULTIMATELY IT'S WHAT YOU VALUE OF YOUR LIVING ENVIRONMENT THAT COUNTS. SHENZHEN CAN BE CLEAN IN PLACES, JUST LIKE ANY CITY, FILTHY IN OTHER PLACES. IT IS AN ARITIFICIAL CITY ALMOST DEVOID OF CULTURE. THE ONLY "CULTURE"THERE IS ONE OF MAKING MONEY! BY COMPARISON, GUANGZHOU IS OLDER, FULL OF CULTURE, EXCITING IN EVERY WAY, YET IN SHENZHEN WILL PROVIDE YOU WITH MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO EARN EXTRA BECAUSE THERE ARE MORE THERE THAT WANT TO LEARN ENGLISH AND HAVE THE MONEY TO PAY FOR IT.
AS FOR ME, GUANGZHOU WINS...HANDS DOWN!!! |

Not true at all. I'm in China to save money and I'm saving 10K a month right now in Shenzhen. I teach 5 days a week, 8-hour shifts, 5-7 classes a day, anything over 105 a month is O.T. I do mostly 1-2-1 test prep, a few salons and ECs.
I have a BA, TEFL, TESOL, and IELTS examiner certs.
I've taught at XMU, SZ Poly, and I've traveled to Zhuhai and Guangzhou.
There are teaching jobs in all of these cities for native English speakers with or without degrees or experience.
I know this from personal experience.

Not true at all. Plenty of culture to be found in Shenzhen, a Chinese city filled with Chinese culture. Words like only are called absolutes in essay writing and are best to be avoided.
I've made my own stupid statements here but wouldn't it be nice if more posters spoke from personal experience rather than general conjecture? |

I like Shenzhen. For one thing, because of the huge migration to the city in the past 20 years it's probably got the widest variety of good food available in all of China, or it's at least equal with any of the other big cities in the country on that count. Put it this way, if the food in a particular city sucks then it won't be of much interest to anyone no matter how much other "culture" it's got.
Other things I like about Shenzhen: it's location right next to Hong Kong, the recent subway expansion that now covers most of the city, and it's definitely cleaner than many other cities in China, incl. Guangzhou. |

I didn't say it cannot be done...plus you have all the right qualifications, the woman in the original post only has TESOL and is expecting to make heaps of money. I used to work in Shanghai putting in about 120 hours of teaching a month and making over 20K RMB. Sure, had a lot of money, but didn't have any time for myself. Then moved to the Gulf for a while, worked in a university and got paid 30K+ RMB per month for doing very little. So I think that if you are qualified and certified there are better countries where you can go to save money (without breaking your back). And the original post was talking about saving money and moving back home to Canada to continue her life there (now with a family). So sure a single guy in China can save heaps, but when you have a family where only one person is working, it gets harder. |

Thanks for the info. I have been trying to find out for a while what the subway situation is like in Shenzhen. I know that Guangzhou has a really extensive one and Shenzhen's is kind of in the development stage.
What I would like to know is exactly how far along they are. I'm used to living in Seoul where a subway station is never more than a five minute walk away. It is rare to need to take a hot and sweaty bus.
In Shenzhen, is the subway extensive enough now that you can get just about anywhere worth going to without taking a bus or waiting for a long time? |

No.
GZ's subway is better, but their coverage is nowhere near good as Seoul's.
I like how we're allowed to discuss living and working in Korea on the China forums now. I remember when even a whiff of k-fruit would result in instant lockage. |

YOU ARE CORRECT TO CALL ME ON THIS!

I DID USE ABSOLUTES HERE, AS ANY CHINESE CITY WOULD, BY DEFAULT, HAVE THE RICHNESS OF THE PEOPLE WHO RESIDE THERE. SHENZHEN IS NO EXCEPTION IN THAT SO MANY OF THE RESIDENTS HAIL FROM MANY OTHER PROVINCES THAT THEY BRING THEIR DISTINCT CUISINE WITH THEM. I STAND CORRECTED!
HOWEVER, IT WASN'T CONJECTURE THAT I WROTE THIS. I HAVE LIVED IN BOTH CITIES, AND WAS JUST SHARING WHY I PREFERRED GUANGZHOU AS A CITY VS/ SHENZHEN. THE TWO ARE QUITE DISTINCT. |
