I'm from the UK but I have US passport. Im coming to Mexico in about a month. Whats the deal with visa's please? Do I need to get a tourist visa here or can I just show up and get one at the airport? Also, once I'm in Mexico and I have a job do I need a school to sponsor me to get an FM3?

You'll probably be given a tourist visa while you're on the plane on your way to Mexico. If you find a job, most reputable schools will sponsor you for a work visa, but you may have to do the paperwork yourself as well as pay for the visa. You also have the option of applying for a work visa that allows you to work independently, which would allow you to work for a school or schools and also teach privately.

Just make sure you mark "tourist" on the visa. If you mark something else, it's a different process, more expensive, and where they ask you for different documents - something that can delay your visa a long time.

You can stay in Mexico for 180 days. You do not need to apply for a visa before arrival to Mexico. You will fill out both customs and immigration forms on the airplane. American citizens get a tourist card, keep it with you (or safe at least) or pay a fine when you leave the country.

By the books you will need a FM-3 (or whatever its called nowadays) to work legally. But most language schools will interview you on Friday and have you start on Monday (obviously this isnt by the book, but not much is in Mexico).

Colegios tend to have more time to hire and plan things (unless a teacher quits mid-year, which tends to happen alot with working conditions inside most colegios) so they will more often sponser you for the FM-3.

Plenty of teachers work under the table, but if yuo are serious about being in Mexico, at some point you will need to have a FM-3, CURP, RFC #, IMSS ID etc

Tomorrow the new rules promulgated 6 months ago will be implemented. My friends at Yucatan Expatriate Services indicate that neither they nor the workers at migracion know exactly how this will work...or won't. Probably the latter, at least for the short term.

I was lucky. My FM3 was ready yesterday.

I wonder how long it will take for all the INM employees all over the country to figure out how to implement the new rules. Hopefully, it will happen before I have to renew my FM3 next May.
