Hello,
has anyone recently returned to teaching after a break? 10 yrs ago I completed CELTA, did 2 yrs in Korea and then returned home and completed graduate DipTESOL.
Anyway I had intended Tesol to be my back up career for when I got tired of working at home, and that time has arrived (sooner than I expected). I've spent last 8 years building a business and now burnt out and looking for a 1 yr break. My corporate career is marketing so teaching business english is probably the expected road to take, but I would prefer to teach primary school kids (more fun). Now, what I didn't take into account was aging! Next year I'll be 39...so anyone been in the same boat? Returned to tesol, where have you found work? Also would like hear from others in the same age group about your experiences
cheers all comments welcome

Assuming your passport is from one of the "7" anglophone countries (you did say you have previously worked in Korea) then with your Grad DIP and MATESOL you can (also assuming your CBC is clean) pretty much choose any country in Asia and away you go.
If you want to teach business English or business in English then look at university positions in China teaching marketing to undergrads or EFL at any level.
If you want to work at the primary school level (k-12 school) then just about any country outside of Taiwan or HK (home country certification is required to work in K-12 schools) will have jobs available to you.
39 is not a problem (I am mid 50s, male, ugly and well padded and still have more offers than I can shake a stick at).

thanks for your insights & country info - sorry my original post was misleading I have edited it out - I only have diptesol (I referenced MA Tesol in case people didn't know about diptesols as I can imagine most uni's have phased them out like mine).
Anyway thanks again for your reply, food for thought, and yes I have a NZ passport. And, good to hear some reassurance on age...looking around the other forums was getting impression teachers were considered over the hill at 29! |
