Hi All

Just wondering if its a good place to work... they seem to have advertised a few maths positions starting end Aug?

Any info would be great!!!!!!

Well, I heard that it WAS good, until some time last year, when apparently everything went t*ts up. I don't know what caused that to happen, or exactly what DID happen, but I believe a few people got heavily burned.

Perhaps somebody who's still there (or was there) can provide us with enlightenment and illumination here?

BTW, if you're being recruited through one of those dreaded recruiters, LP, you should know that they usually offer raw deals, but laced up with a lot of pretty lies and palatable half-truths. A direct hire is much preferable. What sort of package are they offering?

Salary: AED12198 (3-5 years), AED12678 (5+ years), AED13177 (10+years) per month tax free /
Accommodation Housing allowance per month AED9280 (single) AED11600 (couple) /
Relocation Allowance: AED20000 for furniture and utilities /
Medical Insurance: For up to 3 children /
Flights: Annual for employee and spouse but not children /
Education allowance: AED60000 per year (suitable for one child only) - NOT nursery and KG

Any good?

That is a pretty low salary. Okay, it's not the worst I've seen, and private schools DO pay less than state schools, but with 4 years experience and an MA, I'm earning more than the highest wage listed there. What perks are included? (Housing, transportation, flights for you & yours, education stipend for dependents, etc.?) That could make the difference.

edit: oops. I missed the WHOLE REST OF THE POST where my questions were answered. I'd like to blame reading 90 essays about the same thing this week.

12000 is a little over US$3000 per month. If you can pay all your bills on that income and still have enough for transportation and daily necessities, have at it!

Two questions I have:
1- Is the place worth applying to?
2- What salary should I expect in general for 5 years teaching + MSc?

1. probably not, but it depends how desperate you are
2. 15k a month minimum, I'd say, with those qualifications and experience

Adveti is actually the twin of IAT. The pay scales are pretty much the same. Both fall under ACTVET.

Adveti runs the new STS vocational schools, and the system is dedicated to vocational education at the secondary and tertiary levels.

Think of IAT as the "Academic" stream, and Adveti as the "Applied" stream.

But as for salary...why is housing allowance kept out of the calculation? It's paid in a lump sum with the salary. Unless my math skills have fled, that's just shy of 140,000 a year for married staff, and over a 110,000 for singles. It is not hard to find a nice place for half either amount, and the rest is your to spend. You actually be getting about $6500 US a month, which puts you in the top quarter of incomes in the US.

If all that qualifies as a "low" salary, especially for high school, I'd like to know where I can apply to for paycheques north of this.

Personally I am curious to see how the IAT and Adveti scales will fare against DWC High School.

Traditionally in the Gulf, we quote salary and housing separately .. not a total number. That way we can compare all the different pay systems. Some places offer free housing rather than an allowance. It is more accurate this way as a housing allowance is not the same thing as a salary.

When one compares compensation, one should look at salary and then total benefit package. For instance, many employers give a 30,000 Dh furniture/settling in allowance.

Most employers with a large upfront furniture allowance like this pro-rate it over the contract. It seems fair enough. But, I wouldn't consider it a loan since most people complete their contract and owe nothing at the end. Cool

No sense burdening newbies with too much information. I was merely referring to keeping numbers to comparable formats.
