I put up my resume on several internet websites and I recently received an e-mail from this organization. They sent me the following job description:
Quote: |
Basic requirements:
College degree and/or an English teaching certificate such as TEFL, TESOL or CELTA etc.
Minimum 3 years of ESL teaching experience
experience in IELTS or TOFEL training preferred
Creative, disciplined and self motivated teachers only, please.
Job Description:
Teaching English to classes of 15-25 students (high school and high school graduate students mainly); 10-12 hours a week at Tengdas International University Foundation Program School in Zhengzhou.
One-day trip to a city near Zhengzhou (called Luoyang) to teach at Tengda's associate schools once a week (transportation will be paid by the company); *Extra compensation will be provided on a daily basis in case the teacher needs to go on such trips for two days a week.
Housing allowance with 1000RMB/month.
Minimum 8,500 RMB monthly salary; negotiable depending on the applicant's qualifications and experience;
3 to 4 weeks of holiday with salary during a contract of one-year period (during the months of July, January and February); Reimbursement of round-trip airfare from your city to Zhengzhou upon completion of one-year contract
** Total Teaching Hours Per Week: 20 maximum |
Initially, this sounded pretty cool. 10-12 teaching hours for 8,500 RMB is a heck of a deal to me. Then, I saw the farming out to Luoyang. Towards the bottom, I saw the maximum teaching hours go up to 20 hours which contradict the 10-12 teaching hours I was supposed to have.
Then I went to check the university program that I would work in and I could only find the name on their own website.
I read more and saw that they were a consulting service when I thought they were actually their own academy or university program.
Is this advertisement a bait-and-switch set up to draw me in for a cruddy job? Does this organization have a positive reputation? |

I don't know that company. That's a good salary for Henan, but it sounds like you'd earn every jiao of it. The foundation programs are partnerships that unis form with private money to try to increase revenue. They try to prepare kids to go abroad to the UK or Australia or possibly other countries, all for a much higher tuition fee than the regular public university students. The students may not have even taken the gao kao (university entrance exam) or did poorly on it. Or they may have screwed up some other way. They come from rich and/or well-connected families that can afford to send them abroad. You would probably get a few students that come ready to learn, a few that will never be ready and a few in the middle. These classes will take a lot of energy and preparation if you care.
The "affiliate" in Luoyang could be any kind of school, so you might have anything from small children to business people taking classes. Try to get some clarification on that. |

A VPN isnt necessary, but correctly identifying the web address is.

Now that Cairnsman has sorted that out for us (thanks BTW), I just checked the job you are looking for:
** Total Teaching Hours Per Week: 20 maximum
So, yea. If you are looking for minimal hours (12-14) my guess is you won't get it there if they farm you out. |

you have 10-12 hours in zhengzhou.
the teaching in luoyang is in addition. another 4 hours perhaps?
a possible second day each week in luoyang, yet another 4 hours.
that's puts you at "up to 20."
you might ask whether that would be six days per week. |
