My wife and I have been asked to teach at a summer school in Shenzhen and the contact/recruiter suggested I nominate a salary. Having been offered a job last year at Suzhou university: 8000rmb for 4 weeks, I thought 6000 for 12 continuous days was reasonable. The return message was "sorry 3000 would be the most we could pay. But we will pay your busfare from Zhaoqing to Shenzhen" (60yuan). hahaha!!
Well if they want inexperienced, babysitters with non-university qualifications and/or teaching diplomas, 3000 may be fine but sorry pal, not for this sucker! I came across the following post which would suggest some recruiters think westerners are naive or stupid and maybe some of us are. Your reflections please?
Dont let a school tell you they cannot afford to pay you a high summer
salary. Consider a summer program from the position of the school.
1 teacher = 60 students. 2 classes, 30 students each class.
Tuition: Avg = 1,200 x 60 students = 72,000 Rmb REVENUE
School Costs: Insurance, Electricity, Venue, Assistants, Overhead and
Management, Salary Costs.. (dormitory for students, food, and textbooks are almost always separate costs charged by school)
26,000 Rmb COST PER TEACHER + TEACHER SALARY 15,000 Rmb =
37,000 TOTAL COSTS
72,000 - 37,000 = 35,000 PROFIT
IF PERMISSION IS LEASED FROM A UNIV. THEN MINUS 10% LEASE FEE (35,000 - 3,500) = 31,500 Rmb
10 TEACHERS = 315,000 rmb Profit
I should add that meals and accommodation are included but no airfare or travel allowance. So if the above is correct, it would seem that 15000rmb is closer to the mark. |
