|
|
Oman - have had enough of it --- any happy TEFL profs in UAE?
I've an native English speaker, BA, Master's, TEFL and 8 yrs of experience teaching. I have heard to avoid HCT but are there some colleges which are recommended. Is anyone happy with their college situation?
Do the universities in UAE use recruiters or are there direct applications?
If you have a place which you would recommend please PM me.
Thanks ahead of time. |

TEFL profs? There are PhDs who are teaching for MA programs, but you don't have one do you?
Google up their websites. They all have an online application system and direct hire. With HCT in the crash/burn stage, the competition is very high for any openings at the few better employers. (ZU, UAEU, AUS, UoS)

Though they're on their way out of generally running the schools, working for a PPP (public-private partnership, basically an education agency working in K-12 schools) as a teacher trainer might be a potential alternative to the university route. |

My dear GP, I would strongly advise you to NEVER use a recruiter for a teaching post in the Gulf.
They have no interest in representing the employer properly (which is hardly surprising, given the caliber of some Gulf employers), and only wish to pick up their fee for sending that innocent piece of fresh meat overseas.
They are therefore no strangers to the 'pump and dump' philosophy, preferring to talk the school or college up and then, once you're hooked, leave you in the middle of some vile desert outpost having to face a cage full of uncontrollable wild animals (i.e., a classroom full of Emirati teenagers).
No, try ZU or somewhere else; and just make sure you avoid HCT (click on the www button below if you don't know why)! |

|
|
I have never been in the UAE and am hoping to find a few recommended names to apply to. yes I could wander around on the internet but it will be hard to know which schools are valid. I'd much rather hear from you and recommendations.
It is hard to know by their Ads what the college is really like.
I have only taught at colleges never children. Although I imagine that they would not be much different from the 17-20 y.o.'s that I teach.
Sometimes there is not a choice to choose to work directly. AS in Oman everything is done by a recruiter now, they got the contracts. They all suck but the MOHE has given them the money. A few people who have been here for many years work directly for the MOHE but for the last few years it has all been done via recruiters.
I'd like to give the recruiters a "good business management" course in public relations! Thanks |

I listed the top UAE employers above for you.
And there are direct hire employers in Oman. SQU, U of Nizwa. MCBS, Mazoon, and a number of other private colleges/universities in both Muscat and Salalah.

Sometimes there's no choice. And to be fair, SOME recruiters are actually good. Not just smoke-blowers, as it were. |
