Hey there,
I am wanting to know if anyone has information about teaching in the Xuhui district of Shanghai and if anyone has heard of a recruiting organization called the Shanghai Union Investment (Canada) Ltd. I have tried to find info on the organization on the net but have come up blank.
I also enquired to the organization if the 3600 RMB for 40 hrs or work a week was standard for someone with a masters degree in education and he said that it was customary, if people were satisfied with my work, that there would be 'bonuses'. Is this 'customary'? If it is not written into the contract, am I naive to think he is pulling my leg?
Any information would be very helpful.

I don't know Xuhui in Shanghai, but I must ask you:
RMB 3600 a month for a 40-hour-a-week job? Did type it correctly?
Can$ 3600, maybe, but certainly not RMB! |

If the figures you write are accurate, then my suggestion is: Run away from this offer as fast as your legs can carry you. Some major alarm bells:
- Xuhui district is one of the most expensive places in the city. If you rent a flat here, it costs nearly your monthly salary! 3600RMB is very low for anywhere in Shanghai. But plain and simple, it is criminal to offer this wage in Xuhui for 40 hours a week.
- You've got a Masters in Education, which qualifies you for jobs at the 10K mark and above. You could be working for international and bilingual schools, maybe even universities.
I've got a sinking feeling your recruiter may have handed you over to Telfort International "School" of Business. Why?
- They are assosciated with Canadian recruiters. A friend of mine 2 years ago (from Canada) worked for these guys. The salary and conditions all sound familiar, including 40 hours a week.
- The school is located near Caobao Rd, which is in Xuhui District.
It seems awfully suspicious to be a coincidence, but I could be wrong. At any rate, Telfort is one place to avoid like the plague.

Ouch!
Listen to the folk here. Break off talks immediately. You're not going to negotiate them into a serious deal. Open your eyes. With your qualifications 10K a month is a minimum. I wonder if you have little experience in the real world. Did go straight into master studies?
In any case, do your research. Every foreign teacher will pity you if you are so darn gullible to take this offer. Nobody can help you to begin looking seriously at your options. Look around a whole lot more. Get into contact with a lot more schools. Ah! It would be sheer madness to accept those conditions. Surely this is some jest. Someone please!
International schools. Start there.
You're joking. I can rest easier. For forty hours a week and your qualifications, I suggest you ask 18,000 Rmb a month. You can pick up the receiver at 12. Begin light chatting at 14. Feel free to hang up at any time.

Actually, I have quite a comfortable flat in Xu Hui (Guilin Lu & Qin Zhou Nan Lu) for RMB 1,800. But in every other respect, Steve is absolutely correct. This does indeed smell of Bing Liang! |

Thanks everyone. I am off and running from that company. I've been perusing this website for the last couple of days and am amazed at all the wealth of information.
Yes, the contract said 40 hrs/wk so it was good to hear that would be unsightly. I'll start looking up some international schools.
Kudos to you all, there is some good Karma coming your way.
