|
|
Hi everyone,
Thanks for all your informative posts, it really helps me understand the ESL environment in Turkey. I know there has been quite a few posts about Turkey, so I'll try and get to the point on mine: I have limited experience but will be finishing an MA TESOL this coming Spring. What are the chances of me getting a decent University gig where I can save some money to pay off student loans? (minimum payments would be at $250 but paying more would be better).
My experience:
-1 year as uncertified school teacher for 8th grade at-risk youth
-1 year as school counselor
-6 months ESL experience in Mexico.
I understand that some teachers make as much as 5000 L at university positions although I'm sure they have more experience than me. What is the best that I could possibly hope for? I'm assuming it is also unheard of for Uni's to sponsor flights and housing too, correct?
Any and all feedback welcome,
Thanks

It is possible to get a job with an MA and limited experience. If you're set on a teaching in a university, look into private ones. They often pay better and are more flexible with the amount of experience. They often offer visas, flights, housing, and insurance as well. Entry level salaries probably won't be as high as 5000 L. Maybe closer to the $1500-2000. In my experience you can save money if you can avoid the temptations of traveling and shopping. However, in teaching at private universities it is important to go in with realistic expectations. There will be a lot of perks but the students will more than likely be quite difficult. |

Do you mean 1500-2000$USD? That doesn't seem so bad, but if your talking Lira, that sounds a lot lower than I thought... Are the private uni students that bad? I can deal with tough kids but I was kinda hoping for a break from that! (was a juvenile parole officer for a year and a half). Also, do private uni's really offer all those perks you listed (visa, housing, flights and insurance)? If so wow that sounds like a deal! |

Yes, in USD. Where I taught and in many places I looked housing, flights, insurance, visas were all included. I'm sure there are exceptions to that and other folks on the board might be able to tell you about that.
The students at the university I worked at were frustrating most of the time. Nice kids, but really unmotivated so there can be a lot of classroom management issues. BUT with your background and experience with tough youth, it might be easier for to set boundaries and expectations in the classroom. |

Unfortunately toyiki, I will not be able to start any program until August, but thank you for the recommendations. You wouldn't happen to know whether or not these programs include airfare, housing and insurance would you? If I'm looking for a program that starts fall 2012, when would be the best time to apply? |

These positions are for September 2012. I don't know whether they will want to start in August. Perhaps you could get ITI istanbuls mailing list. You would get these jobs sent to you.
I have no ideas about the airfair private insurance etc. You would prolly have to get an interview with the places.
I would say that Kadir Has would be the better prospect of the two wage wise. |
