Hi, I had to come back to the States and while here my work visa (FM 1 Independent) expired. Can I just renew it when I return or do I have to start all over again?
Thanks for your replies |

You cant renew something that is expired. You have to start all over again, but since the renewel process is pretty much the same as getting a new visa, and the cost is the same, it isnt that different. But hurry. There might be changes coming to the process, and no one (even Migration themselves) knows exactly when, or what, those changes will entail. |

I assume you mean your FM3 expired, right? |

Thanks, I figured I'd have to start over. Just double checking.
I was told it was an FM1 indepentent by one of my bosses and the Mexican consulate. I have my receibos and factura. It's a new type I guess. It's a card like a license. |

I have one of those new cards too. It's called a No Inmigrante visa, not an FM1, which does not exist anymore. I think that's what a tourist visa used to be called. |

I can't tell from your post how long you've been gone, but if you return within 60 days of an FM2/3 expiration, you can get admitted to Mexico on it, and renew it.
This somewhat surprising result is written into the Mexican Immigration Law, which you can read, online. |
