Hello, I am from the US and have a BA in English Lit and a MA in English. I am strongly considering getting CELTA in Feb. What kind of job prospects would I have in Colombia? I have been mainly looking into the UAE, Oman, and Indonesia, but I have some friends from Colombia and am interested in teaching there as well. Some questions I have:

1) Would the CELTA be valued enough to be worth the $4,000 I would have to spend for it (class+living expenses)?

2) Where should I look to apply at (please be specific because I do not know all the acronyms that the various countries use; links would be very helpful!)?

3) What kind of pay can I expect and what kind of living conditions (I will have to make at least $500/month payments on student loans)?

4) Those of you who are there: do you enjoy working in living in Colombia?

I cannot think of any other questions at the moment but would appreciate any advice or information from those who are currently teaching there or have done so in the past!

Do you have teaching experience?

I think you should get a CELTA if your masters didn't include any linguistics type of work. You'd probably be a fairly strong candidate at Universidad Los Andes with those quals.

Read through some of the discussion on teaching in Colombia. I think all your questions have been answered.

Thanks for the quick reply! I will look through this thread more. I have been mainly looking at UAE, Oman, and Indonesia, but will spend more time going through the stuff on here. I took a few classes that dealt with the history of English, structure, and teaching methods, but no solid ESL classes. I am 95% on leaning towards the CELTA, since I have came up with the money for it. If it will knock me up into the next class of employment, I think I will do it with no questions asked lol. I have read that the payment is lower in Latin America, unless you have the right credentials. I am really just wondering if I have enough not to be stuck in a "bottom feeders" job. I have really put in too much work for that, but I totally understand that the no experience thing will be a factor. I will look through the forums but would also like one final answer from you about my prospects, since I have qualifications that don't match up with a lot of what is posted Smile I am in the beginnings of searching right now and would greatly appreciate any and all tips, hints, and pointers. Surprised

$4000 for a CELTA is a LOT. If you end up with a job that pays two million a month, that's four months working to break even. With your qualifications, you're better off looking for experience at this point, even if you end up making one or one and a half mil a month, which would be much more useful than an additional certificate that is not a license IMHO.
