|
|
Hello,
So I decided to bite the bullet and come to Hong Kong. I wanna ask is there a specific time that it is good to come there, and equally important, is there a bad time to come over there? Obviously August is the best, but would it be bad if I get there in January, or... ?
Thank you |

Well, schools start advertising in March and will do so until June or even July. Universities I think are about the the same time. |

My guess is that early January wouldn't be a bad time to be here, as some TEFLers like to do a vanishing trick over the Xmas period. There are also enough schools in HK for there to be regular turnover. However, I'm not an expert on the language academies. I reckon sistercream knows more about this subject. |

Aw shucks, Perilla
For language mills, there's never a wrong time - most of them take no notice of the academic year.
The only thing to remember is that just about everywhere (quasi) academic will be shut down for a couple of weeks around Chinese New Year, which for 2012 is in the last week of January. |

Well... I decided to bite the bullet and get over there. I will arrive in Hong Kong on January 5th. Everything booked. Thank you everyone for helping me with this, it was really helpful. Now I "just" need to find a job.
Thanks again! |

Good luck, don't under estimate the cost and time involved. I under estimated and didn't get very far in September looking for a job. I am gonna try again in February or March. Appreciate any updates or advice you can post on your progress. |

I'd rather not say, as its kinda of embarrassing but in the back of my mind before I left I knew I didn't have enough money and went anyways thinking I could make it work and didn't go too well. Better over prepared than not enough, I've learned.
May be wise to keep applying for some jobs before you go and mention you will be there on your arrival date for a interview if they are interested. |

Well, good luck, but it is a tough market to crack into now.....it seems everyone wants to come making it very competitive. |

Good advice. Try and get interviews/contacts lined up in advance - it will save time and improve your chances. |

Can you share some resources? It seems hard to find legitimate jobs in HK... |

All I can add is patience and determination. I must of applied to every ad I seemed qualified for on SCMP (Classifiedpost) and Jobsdb for almost 6 months. I almost gave up and went to Japan but my heart wasn't in it but I finally got hired end of December. Heading to HK to start work this month sometime. I think work is out there it just takes time and persistence, if you don't have much training or experience like me. HK is a tuff nut to crack. |
