I'm applying for jobs right now -- hoping to start after CNY -- and have modified my cover letter a bit, which I paste into the email. The cover letter in its current form is 289 words including the name of a school and such. The first paragraph is the longest -- 227 words -- wherein I introduce my self and my experience. The second paragraph is much shorter -- 45 words -- and it just contains some general adjectives describing my composure and work ethic. The last paragraph is a sentence and just a polite closing. If I am interested in the school for a specific reason, I'll say so in place of the second paragraph -- or in addition to it -- but this varies letter by letter and is usually left out.

Do you think the first paragraph is too long?
Do you write for every position you apply to?
Do you talk about your teaching methodology in your letter?
Any other thoughts?

Very Happy

They don't even read the cover letter. They will look at your passport, photo, and maybe your resume. The typical FAO who is hiring people probably can't understand a newspaper in English, there's no way they are going to pick up on any nuances in a cover letter and use these nuances to hire/not hire people.

A cover letter is a cover letter. You've never had a job, applied for a job? Your university didn't prepare you to apply for jobs? For curiosity sake, how old are you ?

I'd break up a long paragraph. I agree that many (most?) FAOs at the school won't read the cover letter thoroughly if at all. But just in case, I would use simple English and basic grammar structures, without trying to make it seem to condescending. Perhaps if they find they can read your cover letter, that might endear them to you. Or endear the student, whom they ask to translate, to you. But really, I think they mainly are interested in the passport, and experience.
