Qualifications: MA in English Literature. Tefl and Tesol certificate 120+ hours. 1 year esl teaching experience abroad.

Expectations: I want to live and teach in a warmer part of China. Im guessing that will be Shenzhen, Haikou, Nanchang, Guangzhou, Xi'an and Nanning. Besides expecting to work in a warm city, I would also like for my accomodation to be paid for.

So my question is, what should I expect or ask for, taking my qualifications into consideration?

Unless you hook up with an International School or the mythical school that takes education seriously your MA may be next to meaningless.

You should not have an issue finding a school that will offer paid accommodation.

To get an idea about salary, just surf around here and check out job listings. I think you'll find few schools willing to give you additional money for your quals unless you find a school like I mentioned earlier or one that wants to use your MA as an advertising tool. We keep a guy like that at my current school but he rocks a PhD...in a completely unrelated field. Worst...teacher...ever....but that is besides the point.

I wish I had better news for you but without some luck or connections your quals are not worth much to many (not all) Chinese employers. To those who want actual teachers and will pay solid salaries to attain them, your lack of teaching credentials may hurt. To those who don't care, your salary will likely be the same as a random guy with an online TEFL and a degree that only exists because of Photoshop.

* the above is just my opinion, YMMV

Good Luck!!

Xian: a "warm" climate. If you are referring to the Xian I'm thinking about, you might want to do some checking on average temps.

If an international K12 school 20,000 Yuan monthly plus all the benefits in Guangzhou. Otherwise, in the same city, a program for higher education abroad may offer 10,000-15,000 plus benefits.

Good luck

Thank you everyone for the posts. At the moment Xian's average weather for this couple of days is in its 40's (F) and Shenzhen in its 70's(F). So I don't know how Xian can be warmer. Maybe it's warmer in the summer. And for the salary 10,000 to 15,000 is probably what I will be aiming for. Thanks again everyone for all the responses.

You'll have to take a crap job (relative to your qualifications) for your first year. Then, you make connections and get onto an elite uni that will pay you that much later on.

Even with your credentials, you'll have to take your licks early just like everybody else.
