My wife and I got divorced a five months ago and I have a spouse visa that's good until 2014. I am planning to leave the country for the holidays, but I fear if I go to immigration to get a reentry permit to japan, they might cancel the validity of my current spouse visa. Does anyone know what might happen? Or has anyone done this before?I'm freaking out about it.

Q18. I got married with a Japanese citizen and have stayed in Japan with the status of residence "Spouse or Child of Japanese National." If I get divorced with the Japanese citizen during my period of stay, will the immigration control authority revoke my status of residence?
A. Since the status of residence "Spouse or Child of Japanese National" is listed on Annexed Table II of Immigration Control Act, your status of residence will not be revoked even if you reside in Japan with such resident status and get divorced with your Japanese spouse during your period of stay.

Alright my visa should stay the same and I can stay in japan, but can I get a reentry permit on my visa and leave Japan if I'm divorced?

Go and apply and find out if they give you one.

No one here can tell you what any given individual immigration might or might not do for you. They have huge discretion, but you're not going to lose the current visa simply by applying for a reentry permit.

Your visa will be valid. No reason they should disallow a reentry permit.

I was granted a reentry permit eventhough I'm divorced. It is valid until the day my spouse visa expires which is in 2014... For future reference for anyone in a similar situation,,, don't worry.[/list]
