Hey.
So I want to move to abroad and teach at a good International School. (South America).
I only have a Business Degree. So here is the thing. I need to get certified first.
What would be the BEST (time/money wise) route to take?
So far I have gathered I need to go through a Alternative Certification Program.
The Texas Teachers program seems pretty good. http://www.texasteachers.org/
I leaning more towards secondary science (concentration biology) due to it being more sought after in relation to social studies, english, pe ect.
Texas Teachers allows you to complete their program online (still must take the state tests ect). I'm thinking of doing the online portion while I am abroad teaching ESL for this upcoming year. Then return to Texas to do the 1 year probationary teaching before becoming FULLY certified.
My only concern with this is that I hear people say getting a teaching job in Texas is hard. I am thinking they are just looking in certain areas and are not applying to every corner of the state.
So, is there another way / program that would be better for me obtaining my goals? Anything I am missing here?
Thanks |

might be hard finding a job in dallas or houston, but there are
thousands of small towns in southwest texas needing teachers. |

Impossible in Dallas and Plano. Dallas recently told me they won't be needing anymore subs for example until August IF then. I'm not sure about regular teaching positions but remember you have to be state certified and that costs around $4,500.00 dollars here in the beautiful Lone Star State. Plus remember a lot of people I've been told went into teaching when the financial crisis hit in 08 so there may not be many positions available. Add to that the fact that most states seem to be cutting their budgets. All of that equals very few teaching jobs.
Plano, Texas...you want to be a SUB here you have to be state certified!! You heard me right...state certified just to sub in Plano, Texas. They have no regular teaching positions at this time. So I guess one could spend the year or two getting certified, plus pay that $4,500.00 dollars, and THEN you can sub for Plano and make $80.00 dollars a day.
TEFLer's are better off teaching outside of the U.S. at this time. |

I plan on teaching a normal subject at an International School abroad. No more TEFL.
I dont care where I teach in Texas, as I will only be doing it for the one year to get certified.
So id imagine it wouldnt be hard if you dont care where in Texas you teach. |

I'm just curious as to why no more TEFL for you. There are some private schools in Mexico City where you would be a teacher teaching one subject probably.

I have read where it can take up to two years to get certified. I think the site was www.iteachtexas.com

Good point. I may look into other parts of Texas as well. Let me know how things go my fellow professional TEFLer. |

You make a lot more money teaching at an International School than someone teaching ESL in most cases(unless you get a good Uni job in Asia or Middle East) And to teach at reputable International Schools you need to be a certified licensed teacher.
For TexasTeachers, its a 1 year program. After completing the program you must do 1 year of probationary teaching (fully paid ect) before getting your full certification. |

But what do I know.
You may know tons or even just a handful but they aren't working at the better schools, aren't getting the best remuneration packages and are more likely to be doing a gap year than making a profession out of it.
There ARE shortcuts and YOU do pay for them.

I dont know how "good" their schools are considered, but they are living quite comfortably.
Im just saying to imply that you must have prior experience to get a job at an international school is inaccurate. |
