Met her 2.5yrs ago in her last year of Grad school (education) and she just got laid off from her first job.. 1yr term assignment at my old high school teaching english (9th/10th grade) The school district didn't bring her back (budget reasons) and she has had 3 interviews in Wy and ID..but no job offers.
I keep telling her not to worry as she will get picked up somewhere.. do you all agree or have any suggestions where she can make 3-5k overseas? She also has taught in London for 2 months where she obtained a Tesol cert.
Thanks in advance!

Sorry to her that. Tell her to come to Russia! Plenty of little 'uns who need teaching. |

I'm sorry to hear about your gf's situation. Asking where someone can "make 3-5k" is not exactly a good way of putting it.
1. I assume Wy is Wyoming and ID is Idaho, so that makes her American?
2. Asking about US dollar amounts is valid only for work in the U.S.
3. Making vs. saving are two different things. Are you saying she needs to be able to save (or have available to spend on something) the equivalent US$3000-5000 per month? |

Referring to your title: do reassure her that in the current economic climate, it is quite common for lots of people. I know rationally she will know this, but nevertheless the reassurance will help, because people do start to take it personally, even if that sounds irrational. It's a miserable experience. |

i'm not sure that going overseas is good advice for someone
having a breakdown.
if anything, it will double or triple the stress. |

Russia having been mentioned in this thread, I'm not sure that it is the ideal place for somebody feeling on edge, as people can find this part of Europe rather alien and I've heard it said that it is not a good place for people who are already feeling depressed.
On the other hand, the feeling of being back at work and being needed can be a rather useful therapy. In general, parents and students tend to appreciate your efforts (well, most of them). |

If she is really having a breakdown, in the literal sense, then no teaching job anywhere would be advisable. If, she is just doing her nut in frustration in her efforts to find a job, then yes, come to Russia! Join the party! |

I wouldn't recommend the Mid East until she gets more experience. It's also not for the faint of heart. However, Asia, especially SK, might be well-suited for her. Also, if she's a US citizen, she might try the DoDEA (http://www.dodea.edu/home/). |

Thanks for the replies!
I forgot to mention that she also has 80k+ is student loans so her road to clearing that up could be a little longer than others. I added the 3-5k per month amount just to categorize her in the starting (37k-45k$US) teacher pay scale rather than the tefl one. She is american, and I repeatedly tell her to consider "most" states so she can get more experience and stop coming in second place with her interviews. Teach away was mentioned as a middle east recruiter for certified teachers, but I'm sure there are other ones out there.
Anyhow, if it were me and I put in her time and money to get certified I'd be looking at ALL options of getting into a classroom asap while working some kind of menial job.. or better yet I could just pay her 475 a month rent (like she's repeatedly asked) while she sits around with her 2 cats and frantically applies to openings in her pre-selected states? |

Hmmm. A TEFL teacher (I presume you are) supporting a GF and 2 cats into the bargain. Some will say it can't be done....
With debt like you say she has, and quals that won't (currently) get her into higher-paying positions in real international schools, universities, or the ME, for TEFL her only real bet is probably the country-we-can't-name-here. Assuming that none of the pre-selected states comes through, obviously. |

Dear spiral78,
To help Montanaland out, regarding the country that can't be named here, let me ask if you think that would be a good "Career" ("almost a homophone" alert) move.
Regards,
John |

Dear Johnslat:
Good point. No, probably not.
It would only be preferable to the non-career move of hanging about with a pair of cats and having one's rent paid by a boyfriend. In terms of paying off loans, could work - but so far as an enhancement on a resume/CV, absolutely not!
Montanaland's own advice to her, to accept any position in any state, would be better in terms of career. I presume you'd agree?

Hey Montanaland
Your ID says that you are a Fuel truck operator in the Bakken. If so, you must be aware that they are doing lots and lots of hiring in the Bakken area - and also for K-12 teachers. Has she applied there?
VS
(and why are you here on a board for ESL/EFL teachers? Are you doing English for Fracking? ) |
