My FM3 is expiring in a couple months and I am going home to visit. I was thinking about coming back with a tourist visa after a vacation home for the holidays. How would this be done exactly? Do I just turn in the FM3 at the airport and fill out the tourist visa upon reentry? It's still 180 days, yes?

But if your FM3 expires after you return, and you mean to stay in Mexico, why would you want to start over with a tourist visa. In any case, that would mean having an FMT and FM3 at the same time, which I think could cause a lot of confusion down the line. Or have I misunderstood?

Yes, when you leave Mexico, you can turn your old FM-3 in at the INM booth. When you come back to Mexico, you can get a tourist card good for 180 days.

The FM-3 has I think, a validity of 90 days after the expiration date (which means you have a grace period to enter Mexico under the expired FM-3) but after the 90 days you would need to enter as a tourist and start the whole process over again to get another FM-3.

There might be a fine if you come back into Mexico on an expired FM-3. If you are not sure of your return date, just keep the FM-3 and then either enter on it or if it has been too long, come in as a tourist.

Keep your FM3 and visit Immigration when you return. You won't get fined if you show them you were away when it expired. There is a procedure that takes that into account. Don't muddy the waters if you intend to stay in Mexico, would be my advice.
