I'm looking for a recommendation about TEFL International. They are a nonprofit and their site lists UNESCO as a supporter or client, among others. This is their website, <tefllife.org>. Any experience with this certification organization out there? Thank you in advance.

tefllife.org is a dead URL. Perhaps you mean http://www.tefllife.com/ ?

They are an advertiser on this site so you likely won't find much derogatory here about them but:

They are one of many who sell the dream.
They are not accredited by anyone who counts.
They make promises (right on the front webpage) they cannot possibly keep.
They are NOT affiliated in any way with UNESCO.

Beyond that, they are what they are - a TEFL course provider, selling dreams of travel and work abroad.

Caveat emptor - if it sounds too good to be true.....

Bottom line, don't buy into the advertising.

If you want to work abroad as an English teacher, pick a country (or 2), learn what the visa requirements are, learn what the employers want for certifications then choose your course provider (or not as the case may be).

If you are American (their typical target market) then be aware that western Europe is not legally possible.
If you don't have a degree then most of Asia is not legally possible.

Forget about the certificate, holding a US passport makes Western Europe impossible for Americans. as for Asia, lack of a degree makes finding legal work impossible in some countries but not others. And in many parts of Asia, China being one, any TEFL cert will do (if one is even asked about it) because a lot of schools have no idea what they are.

I have no knowledge of TEFL Intl other than looking at their site and reading the posts on the teacher training forum made over the years by Bruce, one of the founders of TEFL Intl. He made some good arguments in favour of various programs, not only the one he founded. But that part of this site seems to be withering away. At any rate, the TEFL International certificate may not be the best one or the most recognized one, but it's far from being the worst. Frankly, after taking a couple of these courses over the years I treat many of them with suspicion.

Not by any remotely acceptable definition of the word.
