Does it matter if a teacher quits or is non-renewed from a university in the Gulf? Is quitting a lot more benefit for the teacher? Do you have a lot to lose if you are "non-renewed" (or fired) over quitting yourself?
I was thinking that it doesn't matter much b/c future employers only contact the References and looks at the EMployment Certificates (which usually doesn't mention whether the teacher quit or he was non-renewed). Unless I'm mistaken, the only major difference is the teacher couldn't use his boss as a Reference if he was non-renewed. But couldn't he use someone else e trusts to give a good reference who worked in that university?
Anyway, if others have come across this contrast between quitting/non-renewal, what did you do? |

You might think that I'm arguing semantics here (I'm not!), but I think that your choices/lexicon is too restricted. When I left an employer on good terms (LONO provided) in Saudi once, actually twice, I gave my 90-day resignation notice as provided in my contract and left with everything coming to me and no indigestion of either side except me towards my BAe sycophant "principal" who became intolerable the 1st time and the 2nd time with another employer because my family had been forcefully evacuated in 2003 and ten months separation became intolerable.
Did I quit? Maybe in your world, yes, in my world, no. Was I refused a contract renewal, no.
Ergo, I can't qualify for you pigeon-holed choice of responses.
Maybe you should think a bit deeper than just surface-level. Impurities ALWAYS rise to the surface.
It's not a well-thought-out poll! |

Have you been reading the tea leaves? Planning a misdeed?
More often than not, even with a "non-renewal" one is able to get a letter of recommendation... often a glowing letter from the person who non-renewed you. You are correct that the Ref letter can come from anyone at your previous job... not merely your direct supervisor - though it is preferable to be from someone in management. Now, if it has been one of those 'burn the bridges' firings where you really screwed up... drunk in class... caught in flagrante delecto with a student of either sex... etc, it may get more difficult. I know teachers who have been non-renewed every other year... for years... and they have a stack of glowing recommendations.
If you decide to quit, you will have to comply with the contract as to notice.

Well, IS & VS, it's been a slow burn...no major screw-ups as was referred to. I could just walk away and quit and keep a glowing reference letter.
Students just love me...they have a passion for me to be their teacher.

Well, as Spike Lee once implored: "Do the right thing!"
It's sage advice if I don't say so myself! |
