|
|
After 30 or so years of research I would like to share this information to newcomers regarding TEFL salaries for those who are thinking of teaching English here in the LOS..
Baht 15,000 - Baht 50,000 is the average range one can expect here. Non-native speakers of English with proper TEFL qualifications/degrees can expect to earn between Baht 15,000 - Baht 30,000 Per Month. Those who earn between Baht 30,000-Baht 40,000 Per Month are native speaking English teachers with proper qualifications (degree/certifcate etc). Those earning between Baht 40,000 - Baht 50,000 Monthly are few and far between and usually have a Bachelors or Masters degree and TEFL certification + many years teaching experience in the LOS. Good luck in your search! |

Based on about 10 yrs of exp. with 6 years of managing (hiring teachers and dealing with salaries) in 3 different schools at varying levels of the spectrum in Thailand.

Yep, not too far off this time for a change. Non-Native varies a lot. If you have a passport from a 'big 6' country (Can, US, UK, Aus, NZ, S.A) you will have a better shot at proper salaries. If you speak English with little noticeable accent, you have a better shot at proper salaries. If you can teach other subjects, such as math or sciences at a secondary level, you have a shot at doubling that salary or even better. I personally know 6 NON-NES teachers teaching maths and sciences at mid-tier Inter/private schools making 50,000+/mth.
By the way, there is no such thing as 'proper' TEFL qualifications. To teach legally in Thailand, you need a minimum of a bachelors degree and you need to get a teaching license waiver from the Teachers Council. Many low end schools will hire teachers illegally though. I wouldn't want to work in that kind of setting personally.

Again, there is no such thing as proper qualifications. To teach legally in Thailand you need...see above.
Starting NES teachers teaching TEFL with a basic bach degree will probably be in this range though. With a couple years experience or a related degree, you should be looking at making at least 35,000 but aiming for 40-50,000/mth if you are any good. Once again, if you can teach maths or sciences at a secondary level, you can make much more than 30-40K/mth.

Once again, this is where you lose it. There are plenty of people earning 40-50K/mth in Bangkok. In fact, I know very few people in Bangkok who make less than 45,000/mth. Some, but not most have Masters degrees. Most have a couple years exp or more. Some have B.Ed/PGCE and/or are certified to teach in their home countries. Those with home country certification looking to teach EFL in Thailand can aim to make 45-60K/mth and look to make up to 70+K/mth after they learn the scene. Other subjects (maths/sciences) often get more. Home country certified teachers at my current school start at about 70,000/mth plus benefits to teach EFL. Other subjects get more. Flights paid if hired outside Thai. I know of at least 2-3 other schools with slightly lower but similar packages. I also know of at least 2 schools that will soon be raising their salaries for EFL teachers but will require teacher certification (NOT TEFL CERTIFICATE).
After a year or 2, If you havent figured out how to make money in Thailand as a teacher, than you arent trying or just dont get it and probably never will. I have tripled my salary in less than 8 years.
Those that want it handed to them, are lazy, want to party all the time, dont understand professionalism, are not interested in professional development, cant adapt to the Thai way of things, etc,... well they usually dont make it, or get stuck making sub 40,000/mth salaries.
P.S. Appearance and age play a factor in some situations. Some schools are blatantly racist or wont hire older teachers.
P.P.S. Above quotes are based on Bangkok. Chiang Mai and other touristy areas often have slightly lower salary packages and few top end options.
