Here is a link to Carrefour's K.S.A. website..
http://www.carrefourksa.com/index.php?option=com_products&view=promotions&Itemid=30&lang=en
It serves up current special offers -via the 'PROMOTIONS' tab -
on a range of foodstuffs, including rice.
According to this website, 10kg of rice costs SR.47.95.
That's about 8 quid...around $13, right?
As a matter of fact, as Carrefour is one of the leading hypermarkets
in the K.S.A.,this website represents a useful guide
to a wide range of goods both for expats already inside the country,
and those considering a job application, too.

It's 1 USD = 3.75 SAR
Here's a good currency converter: http://www.oanda.com/currency/converter
Per Panda's website, their most expensive rice is 215 SAR at 45kg (99 pound bag), which comes out to $57. That's a lotta rice! |

thanks for sharing this, it was fun to look through the circular and say "OOO i can get that there too?"
Guess my own cultural bias needed a wake up call on that one.
Seriously, the prices seem similar to larger city prices here in the states, this was super informative for me and bookmarked. thanks OP! |

There is also the material for a Beginners' lesson
in basic Arabic vocabulary
in the form of these promotional pages, too.
Can you read the Arabic version alongside of
the English names for these products?

Food in Saudi is very reasonable. I spend around 150 SR per week for shoppping, and that covers the vast majority of my meals for the week, as I eat mostly at home. 150 SR = $40 u.s. Add to that, I eat humus
most nights, and that costs just 6 SR ($1.60) so total food costs for the week averages around $50 u.s. Very reasonable.
Some teachers here, live on less. You can be a real minimalist here, if you so choose. Probably my food bills would fall into the average range for teachers, or slightly less.
Those teachers who eat a typical 'kabsa meal' for lunch typically spend between 15 - 20 SR ($4 - $5.30) so that is still very reasonable compared with most of the countries we hail from.
Compared with Korea, grocery shopping here in Saudi is much cheaper for things like fruit and vegetables. Fruit was horrendously expensive in Korea. I recall a small bunch of grapes costing around $10.
The small 'kimchi' restaurants in Korea, were excellent value for money, though, where you could get a good meal for around $5 u.s. equivalent. So eating out there was about the same as Saudi.
Ghost in Saudi. |
