When looking for work, I applied for many jobs. I didn't initially get a job with my top choice, so I agreed to another job. My documents have been sent to apply for a work permit, but the contract won't be signed until I arrive in China.

Now I just received an offer from my top choice. I haven't yet received a work permit from the first job, but I assume it has been applied for. Can I withdraw from the first job and take the second one without a release letter? Or have I already reached the point of no return?

The point of no return is when you get the visa stamped in your passport.

Contact them ASAP and tell them that something personal has come up and you are unable to take the job.

Changing jobs could certainly be considered personal, so it's not a lie. You personally want to work at the other place.

Good luck.

how 'bout a time frame? when were you offered the job, and when
did you accept? when did the second choice receive your documents
and apply for (and pay for) processing your work permit?

wouldn't it me funny, y'know, if just as you tell the second school
to cancel your application, your first choice school's fao gets an
application from the perfect applicant? now they have a new
'top choice.'

so the fao is thinking......."well, we haven't gotten the work permit
stamped, so many we can call in a favor and walk it back. after
all, the contract won't be signed until they arrive in china, right?
or have we already reached the point of no return?"

i assume you'd like to be told as soon as a decision is made, yes?
if you've made your decision, call 'em now. not an email, which
may not be opened for a week.

yes, you CAN say you've accepted another position. you don't need
to make up a story. really. oh, yeah....no release letter needed.
you haven't started yet. don't have the z-visa tied to the employer,
nor the FEC, nor the RP.
